Frits, love the the pics of the old buildings and barns, if walls could talk the history they would tell. 👍
It was interesting when the county did some research on our property. It started with the first deed in 1802 taken out by a German immigrant for 200 acres. Likely he and family lived on the property earlier than that. The first building was a two story log home built over a spring with running water year round. And the building is still there.
Having cold water running in the basement was an easy way to keep milk cold.

Within a few miles of here there were 7 log cabins that I knew of, close enough to take the banana seat bike to and play around in. These were built around1846.
Two are still standing, restored:

Very straight tamerack logs from a nearby marsh

And another was where my gggreat grandfather settled on the farm. Pictured is his son looking over his childhood home. Only a slight mound now remains.

I still have the original lambskin deed for the land grant, signed by president Tyler, 1844.

The log ends here have two types of dovetail joints, with Cornish and Norwegian ancestry. Yours have something different. Where would they have gotten that from? Also, spagnum moss was used for chinking on the Norwegian tamerack, and mortar on the white oak.

Some great looking barns!!!! What's really amazing to me is how much work had to go into building them, along with clearing the land and creating a farm without modern machinery, or even electricity.
