I hate it when I'm outsmarted by a hog. Aargh!

I rigged a light by running a 200' extension cord over near the feeder. I used a hooded droplight to light up the area so I could get a better shot at Porky. All I've seen the last two nights is two coons eatin' all my corn.;) I may be forced to buy a trap and set it down there in the dark. I'm sure I cannot get a good shot unless it is a full moonlit night without some additional light. I really hate it when I get dissed by a pig.:p

Jim,

When we had a hog eating the bird seed in our front yard, we tried watching for it every night, but never saw it. Then I got the idea to buy a motion sensor from Walmart. I put it on a chair, then ran a work light to my bedroom window. When the hog walked by the motion sensor, it turned on the light in my window, which woke us up. It took three nights to figure out a way to get the shot without spooking it, but it kept coming back every night about the same time, so we were able to improve our tacticts.

Here's a picture of what we used.

Eddie

Eddie, I agree with Bird. That's a pretty creative way to do the "hog alarm." My problem is the distance and not having a good way to turn on a light and wake me up at the same time. That's why I think the trap may be a better way to go, especially for such a small pig.

I have a driveway sensor installed on a telephone pole near our driveway. It uses a motion sensor that can transmit wirelessly up to 1000 feet to a base unit that buzzes when someone drives down the driveway. Kathy got tired of having strangers show up at our front door with no warning, so I installed this alarm. Unfortunately, I cannot hear the darn buzzer. My hearing is just not good enough. However, the alarm's base unit has one relay closure with two spade connectors. To use this, I took an old wireless doorbell and hard-wired the wireless button to the base unit. Now, I can put the doorbell anywhere in the house and it goes "DING-DONG" anytime someone turns into our driveway. It's a combination of a wireless alarm and a wireless doorbell.:) It has worked great too, except for one morning when someone decided to turn around in our driveway at 5:00 am.

Jim,
You can build your own trap using some angle iron, cattle panels and a welder. I have some photo's of a nice one, if you need something to go buy. Otherwise, I've seen them for sale locally for about $100- $150. I believe Cabela's had some out front.

For bait, sour some of your deer corn in a bucket for a week or so. Also, a head of cabbage dusted with powedered Koolaid mix works well. Regular deer corn will attract too many deer and turkeys.

Gordon, thanks for the tip on the bait. I would have just used dry corn. I think my neighbor may have a trap I can borrow, but I have not seen pictures of the hog since I put the light on for a few nights. I've had several nights with no light and the pig has not returned. However, about 11 pm last night, I heard a single shot, so somebody else may have "cured" our pig problem. Time will tell.

I'm also in the hog eradication group. My neighbor turns his pigs out every year around deer season. He has 100 acres and sees no problem in it. Trouble is they head straight for my corn piles. I killed his boar after it ran me last year. I then killed 2 sows that were under my barn rooting for dog food. I hate to do it, but when we first moved here, he had about 20 head he turned out that never came home. It took me and more neighbors within a mile or two about 3 years to kill all of those and their offspring. Fortunately, we don't have too many truly wild ones. And I did give him fair warning about his pigs. It's amazing how much ground they can root and tear up. Good luck to you, jinman.

Pigs can make one big, unwelcome mess, but here's a lighter side.
Our neighbor "inherited" a wild pig. It was a black pot belly pig about the size of Jim's. Somebody's pet, just got loose. He decided he was a horse:D .
The neighbors have four horses that they keep in 15 acres of field, every day the pig would go out in the field with the horses and graze. No rooting, no wallowing in the mud, just grazing. This is Central Fl, and it gets a little warm, especially for a black pig, so he would stand in the shadow of a horse and stay cool. Every night, he went to the barn with the horses, got his share of grains, and stayed with them until morning.
It is one strange site to see a pig running with horses.

A sheet of concrete reo mesh makes a good pig trap . We stand it on it's edge and form a circle with the two ends pointing into the center of the circle . Then stake it down so it can't move . use star pickets to make it hold its shape . Create the entrance by putting posts about 1 1/2' apart (put your ten fingers together and point your thumbs inwards , this is the shape it will be). Put the same feed in the trap that it's used to . The pig will force its way through the two ends to get to the food . Once through , the ends come back together and are armed with pointy reo spears . Then grain finish , and serve at xmas with an apple sauce :D .

That should be a crime to turn loose hogs when they are such a problem. Not only should your neighbor lose his hogs, but he should also be fined for such irresponsible behaviour. Somebody asked me once if I didn't feel bad because I shot a neigbor's goat that he let constantly roam loose. I told them that it's true the goat was innocent, but they'd come lock me up if I shot the guilty party.;)

I pass a field on my way to work that has horses and cows plus a deer that grazes with them. I do a double-take everytime I seem the deer out there.

That sounds like a really clever trap. I'm going to keep that in mind if this problem gets worse. I've been here for 16 years and this is the first feral pig I have seen. I'm hoping it's at least that long before I see any more.
