It was dry and rusty - seems to have never seen a spit of grease - as if it was originally assembled dry. Is here such a thing as 'assembly' grease that is designed to permanently (relatively speaking) protect steel surfaces and prevent oxidation/rust? I do not plan on doing this job again, but one never knows and the next owner may appreciate not having to go through the same pain.
If you use never seize or equivalent product on the pins when you install them you won't have this problem again.
