Pintle hitch?

   / Pintle hitch? #21
My ugly dump trailer was built with a pntle hitch to get the most towing capacity. Despite the slack typical of a pintle, they do have merits, and with a little practice, you will get used to the slack. A lot of people who use them on the highway don't like the bump when you decelerate/accelrate. Spring loaded pintle are available and absorb a lot of the shock. I have one out back but since my pintle trailer hasn't been pulled by anything except my JD2555, it is just a dust collector. They make cushions for the ring, but I don't have any experience with them.

With my 5 ton dump trailer, the Bump is almost none existent, I hardly ever hear or feel anything. Probably because of the trailer brakes.

The one thing I notice of all pintle rings is the wear they get, I've seen some worn almost half thru, that can't still have the same rating as when new. wonder if they could be hard-faced with weld or if that would make them to brittle?

News to me on pintle rings wearing. Mine doesn't get many miles, so I am no expert on that. I think the answer would be best located if we can find a trailer mechanic that works on company trailers that are pulled as doubles. The rear trailer is sitting on a dolley and the dolley has a pintle ring on it.They are HUGE, and probably rated for a gazillion pounds due to the massive liability of letting a trailer loose while going down the road. I actually have one of the hooks for a tractor trailer, as I had the guy cut it off of a trailer going to scrap and save it for me. It turned out to be air assisted in the open/close so I have never considered using it. Just another piece of junk to clutter up the backyard, lol. My thoughts on your dump trailer might be that the tongue weight is approaching max capacity and causing accelerated wear of the ring. Hard facing might protect the ring, but I wonder if one of the "wonder plastics" might be a better choice. There are some out there that resist wear under the worse case uses, and might be able to sustain the weight while doing it. A thin wafer of it under the bottom side of the ring might be just the ticket. Nylontron comes to mind as an example
