Old Hickory:

I hope I didn't sound codescending to you. I didn't know your firearms experience. I would probably go with a .357 or a .44 Magnum Revolver. I personally have a model 19 which is a medium fram weapon with a 4" barrel. Having a revolver has an advantage over ANY automatic; the ability to change barrels easily and cheaply. Like I said, I carried a 4" revolver, and anything longer would make it impossible to sit in a car or truck without a swivel holster. A long barrel would also make possibly get hung up getting on and off a tractor, bending down working, etc. You could get, for example a 2 1/2 or 4" barrel wor when you just carry it on the farm, and a second barrel of around 8 3/4" if you want to hunt with it. Not something you would do in the field, but its a lot cheaper than two handguns.

I've carried Colt and Smith revolvers. I prefer the Smith for one reason. On a Colt, the cylinder continues to rotate until the instant the hammer drops. On a Smith, the cylinder locks prior to that point. A Colt, is therefore, more likely to get out of time so that the cylinder isn't EXACTLY lined up with the barrel when the hammer drops. It doesn't happen often, but it can. The result is shaved lead coming back and hitting you in the face. I'm not trying to start a Smith/Colt war, because they are both excellent weapons, but I have been hit in the face with shaved lead from a Colt, but never from a Smith.

One other reason I like a Revolver, is you can lock it to the tractor simply by putting a padlock through the frame strap. The weapon can't be fired and no one can walk off with it. Put sume friction tape on the padlock and it won't scratch the weapon.

Also, for your use, a stainless weapon would probably make the most sense.
doesn't mean it should be left outside, because there are some non stainless springs, etc, but it would get less damage if wet.

Again, I hope I didn't sound like I though you were an idiot, because that was not my intent. I've seen too many people at the range that should have been home with their Intendo, and I don't want anyone getting hurt.

If you are talking about changing barrel length, this is not necessarily the case for all autos. If you're talking about replacement for a shot out barrel, your statement is totally false. Go check your Brownell's catalog if you don't believe me.

Re: Pistols(whats a good one to buy ?)

I know it's simple to replace a barrel on an automatic, with an identical barrel because they disassemble without tools easily for cleaning. What I meant was that a revolver 's 2 1/2" barrel can be easily replaced with a 4", 6" or longer depending on the weapon, with simple tools. I don't know if that can be done with an automatic without replacing the barrel, slide and possibly some springs as well, which I assume would also be more expensive. I would imagine that many automatics are available in one or two barrel lengths, where as revolvers have many more options.

Re: Pistols(whats a good one to buy ?)

The only pistols that I know of that quickly and easily change barrel length are the TC Contender, and the Desert Eagle(6" to 10" barrel). Having had a Desert Eagle in the past, it is a simple, 20 second changeout; the simplest I have ever seen.

Most Revolvers I have seen can be easily changed, but most likely a gunsmith would be the best candidate to do the change and check cylinder gap ect.

You're probably right about that.

Re: Pistols(whats a good one to buy ?)

Well with a sig s&w .40 you can put a sig .357 barrel in it for $100.00 or so. There are marked balistic changes between the loads, but the only change needed is the barrel, the mag and rest stay the same.

Re: Pistols(whats a good one to buy ?)

Dan Wesson used to make some great revolvers with interchangable barrels. In fact, their premium product was a "pistol pack" I believe that had 2,4,6,8,and 10" barrels and one frame. Changed easily between them with a barrel wrench and a feeler gauge to determine the proper setting. Very easy to do.

And very accurate too. They chambered their wheelguns in a lot of neat, powerful calibers, not the least of which was the .357 maximum previously mentioned in this thread. Another proprietary caliber was the .445 supermag, I believe.

I think they are out of business now. Too bad.

Re: Pistols(whats a good one to buy ?)

Accuracy at range will not change significantly though. Longer range=longer barrel. Having used both Glock-21 and 30, I do not expect the short barreled .45acp Glock 30 to have 50 yard accuracy to match the longer barrel Glock 21. Got a pig at 30 yards with a Glock-30 with 3.5" barrel 45acp, but that's another story

Part of it is the barrel length. Part of it is, the sights sit on the barrel(or the longer slide which supports the barrel), and the longer barrel gives a longer distance between sights which helps accuracy too.

I think you can get longer barrels for some 1911a1, that just protrude an inch or so past the slide. It will help a little down range, but it does not offer the longer sight thing. I, unfortunately, can not remember the specific name for it... It's not radius...

Re: Pistols(whats a good one to buy ?)

Dan Wesson made some very fine stuff. It is the exception for quick change on a revolver though for the most part, although there might be some other low production examples. I believe those pistols fetch a fancy price these days.

I wonder how they set the barrels so sight alignment would be correct? Maybe both sights were on the barrel?

Higgy -

You forgot to mention that the whole procedure takes about 60 seconds on a 229. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
