Ballast Pix of concrete filled ballast box

I'm in the process of making me a weight box using a 55 gallon drum, an old weight bar that is one inch solid steel, some plate steel for the top link and good old concrete. I think I will add a couple of those pipes in mine as well. I'm think of going with 1.5" for the handles of tools and some 3" for chain with a fitting on top for a screw cap. Of course the 3" for the chain won't go all the way to the bottom (that would be a serious good especially with my short arms :D ). Thanks for the ideas fellas. I knew there was a reason why I was procrastinating on starting it.

Chris my thought for the day, considering using my plasma cutter to cut in a 2" receiver hitch socket on the back, and about centered Vertically. And steel to reinforce and weld front and back as needed. Then fill with concrete. It would be handy to haul my trailer along, or mesh carrier when using my FEL to move some dirt. :) BG

Thats a great idea. :) I had thought of something like that.
but i just ended up buying a Femco 3 point reciver. and i dont haul trailer
to much...;)

Chris.....:)

Funny this should come up. Just install one in a box I got for my father last weekend. Will be filling it with concrete tomorrow.

I did think about that also but decided I didn't really need it since I also have the three point flex point receiver set up and with the I-Match it's so easy to change, plus I figured that it would be a little heavy with the tongue weight and the concrete for any long towing. If I didn't have the flex point I would put the receiver on the ballast box, I've even seen guys put them on their box scrapper.
But I never thought about the mesh carrier option, I like that and do have one so now I may have to rethink it, I bought the mesh carrier over 5 years ago and never used it yet, I had to have one after seeing my neighbor with his lawn mower on his LOL.
I have a receiver hitch on my bucket that is a must IMO. here's some pics,

What an great idea!! And I have been rethinking the JD weight box, in place of... a carry all on the back 3 point with a 2" receiver socket on the bottom centered and leaving the platform area just above clear to just stack weights on, then I can remove weights as needed and haul stuff. I like the idea of the boom on the bucket.:) :) :)

what if instead of putting pipes in the box, you welded some on the outer edge of the box? you could put caps on the bottom ends to keep your tools from going through, and it would leave a nice level area to haul anything else in the box...

JB,

Nice job! You'll notice a lot more stability with the concrete-filled box. I just wish I had thought of putting in the pipes before I filled mine! :)

Why not weld 2 or 4 pipes with a washer in the bottom to the outside of the weight box then paint them green to match. If I recall you have a guy next door that could do that. It would still work well and would be thinking outside the box. As another poster said.

Here's the one I did for my father.
Filled it with concrete today.

Heavy sob, any idea what they weigh full of concrete. My calculated guess was about 700-800 lbs.

Let me know how the 2" receiver socket works out... I'm still doing my Honey Do Job and have not had time to do anything tractor related ..:(
