Dave,
This is sort of a self import but it's buying through a middle man or "trading company". A true lean self import is factory -direct, right from Jinma or Dongfeng, etc.

Hi again,
Great ideas so far. Thanks a lot. For the last 6 months I have been investigating Jinma dealers in Ontario called most of them. Nobody has one in inventory, some went out of business. Some guys wanted my money to order but I think it is too much risk loosing my money to somebody.

I bought a 60 acre vineyard land in Niagara and I am planting this year 5.5 acres. I will use the tractor there and bush hog the unplanted portion.
I did some importation before mostly construction materials from the US but never from China and no tractors before.
Jinma salesman suggested me to buy a factory
installed tractor and FEL on it which I agree. So Rich's suggestion to add some implements like a rototiller and a bush hog will make sense even I can upgrade to 454 with a cab.
Should tractor's engine be an EPA approved? Other technical details? Cheers.

Andy,
When I imported my frame mounted backhoe, two chippers, and too many extras to write here, I did it directly from Jinma with no middle guys. Did I have problems...of course I did. Jinma took care of every single one of them for me. There were missing parts, wrong parts, damaged parts, etc and nearly all of these were minor. Since I sold some of the shipment I had to be sure I was provided replacements and whatever else I needed.

So..it all boils down to trust and reputation. I have my own company and I import from China. Customers trust us to handle their business from door to door and they are willing to pay for that. I found Jinma to be reliable in spite of problems and I would buy again. As far as other importers there are many good ones around and you can find them referenced on this site. they can take care of everything for you. I've been sourcing from Asia for almost 20 years and have a longstanding rule to not do business with anyone I have not met face to face and any factory I have not visited myself. I even visited the Jinma factory and posted pictures on this site.

If you Google Chinabest and others you might find reputation information. I would phone them and ask for references and phone numbers. A good middleman can save you money and headaches; however, on the other hand you can buy factory direct and save some money. If the middleman does not provide, with a proven reputation like sponsors of this site, tech support, parts inventory, etc, then one must wonder what they are really providing.

A middleman broker can save you $ because they have better factory discounts, freight rates, terms of payment, etc. At the end of the day when the tractor arrives and you have a problem..who do you call or email? If you buy factory direct from Jinma, you have a contact and they will help you.

If you want more info offline, let me know.

If you decide to import the tractor yourself it will sit in a bonded area until it has cleared customs and all amounts payable to the "Receiver General" are paid in full. Storage fees may apply if not cleared quickly. It should not take anymore than an hour of you time to do the required paperwork. If you do a search a few TBN members from Ontario have imported various implements direct from China without any problems other than the regular QA issues.

My experience with customs officials has been very positive and most are willing to go out of their way to help a first timer. I recommend you visit the CBSA website, as the answers to all your questions can be found there.

Risk Of Loss. No one seems to be mention "Risk Of Loss". For every tractor that gets imported in, the importer has to fill out a "EPA" form for every engine imported in. You can not just get on the phone a call a customs broker and say, Hey I got this tractor coming in and I need it cleared. For most parts, custom clearing brokers specialize with certain items. Most of them do not know about the required EPA forms that have to be filled out for agricultural tractors. Customs brokers that do know about the forms require the imported to fill out the forms because of "Risk Of Loss". Those EPA forms can determine a clearing of your tractor, or just another item that ends up in a Government seized auction.

My experience with customs officials, they will try to find every possible way to hold up your order, and your customs clearing process, to find more possible ways to tack on more fees. They love additional fees.

Hi Steve,

That is true, but in this case if it fits the details are taken care of such as duties taxes etc. in the one price. Not saying it s the best solution but an alternative.

Just a note to mention that I have imported through China Best Products and have been very happy with the results and service. Steve is the person I dealt with and it worked fine.

Like anything else, everyone has an opinion. If you need any further info, feel free to contact me via PM through this site.

Cheers

Jim

Note that Andy is in Canada so everything is different. It's almost like another country!
