Most of the other things you suggested, taxes and grow-op surveilance might only happen once or twice a year. I would go with the training flight scenario. Your cabin might stick out and be an easilly recognized landmark. If you are in a good low air traffic area, you may be a nav aid in an impromptu training area. Get ahold of the guy and ask...

Pipeline patrol planes fly low but usually only go in one direction. I guess they'd circle if they saw anything that resembled a problem with the pipeline (or a sunbather on a blanket).

Also, the highway patrol uses planes sometimes to catch speeders.

Training sounds most likely. We have a company that takes people parachuting and flies the same area near our house when the weather is right. The forest service also uses small planes and will circle an area with a good vantage point to watch for smoke over a large area.

Get yourself a cheap scanner that covers the AM aircraft band. You can look up the ATC freq's for the nearby airports (probably from a larger, regional airport) and listen in on the comings and goings. You might be able to learn more that way.

That's an interesting point...the tax man has learned to fly. I suppose if you put up a pole barn in the middle of your woods and keep your gates locked, nobody could get in to inspect. I've wondered how long it would take to be discovered and taxed for it.

I have been told by fairly reliable sources that Fairfield county has done this before. I can't swear that it is true. Seems ironic since Fairfield is one of the poorest counties in the state.

And I'm going to have to look it up, but they will tax almost anything with a roof. I'm wondering if I'm going to have to pay for my 20x30 foot tractor shed (when I get it made). I think you have to have some sort of tax statement from the county before the Co-op will run power to a building but I'm just going to run a line underground from the cabin to the shed so I won't have to get the Co-op involved. The Co-op has a lock on my gate....but the county does not.

So I'll be looking up to the sky looking for the tax man once I get it built because that's the only way he's going to find it!

We get the California Highway Patrol circling. We live about 3/4 of a mile, as a crow flies, from US-50; it is the main route from Sacramento to Lake Tahoe. Our exit is on a long straight-away. They put some patrol officers at eh ramp, and then have the plane lookng for speeders. The plane circles and circles and circles. It is not real loud, but when it goes on for an hour or two, it is annoying. I know they are doing an important job though...

They really like to come out and catch skiers zooming up to the ski resorts in the winter... There's a lot of Sacramento and great San Francisco Bay area traffic that comes through...

When counties use aircraft to check on new structures, they usually hire it done. They have a professional aerial photography company fly the jurisdiction in a grid pattern. They usually have this done on some periodic basis.

The first time I ran into this practice was 1958, when my parents bought a new house. Right after moving in, we poured a patio. Our newly poured building-permit-free patio showed up on the tax rolls almost as soon as we finished it. Soon after, a newspaper article exposed the aerial photography bit. Taxpayers were suitably "outraged," but couldn't do diddly about it.

Over the last couple of months I've noticed a small Cessna flying past my land repeatedly.

So, what could he be doing? I've got a few guesses:


2) DEA looking for marijuana. Last year a sizeable field was discovered nearby by a local wildlife biologist (a friend of mine).

Is there a way to look up aircraft by their tail numbers?

I think #2 holds the most merit IMHO ! For what its worth there are elevation restrictions flying over peoples residences ! The FAA would probablly be the only ones that have access to cross reference tail numbers ! In any event hopefully they will get tired of flying over your property and give you some peace and quiet !

The only thing that seems strange, if it was the DEA I dont think they would be waving, unless they were trying detour any suspicion that the property owner might have over a strange plane repeatedly flying over the same spot !
