I am on a long term project of replanting maybe 10 acres of my property with several different types of grass seeds which some could be rather pricey and I want to do a better job than to just broadcast the seed. What are some good seed planters that a individual could buy? I know rental would be much cheaper but there are no rental places in my area that has anything like this for rent and really not anyplace that I have found that seems to know much about this type of equipment.

The two options I can think of right off are drop spreaders or a small drill. The former will cost considerably less to own and operate but you will probably have to roll the bed after spreading. Both put seed right where you want it though. Other options would be to contract the work out or lease a small unit.

You might contact your local County Extension Office. They have equipment for rent.

I'll second what Billy said. They have seeders and sprayers at my local office. They are not near as much as a all rents center would charge either.

Wow, must be nice. Are rates more or less than what you could get thru an equipment dealer?

Your cheapest option is to work the ground up, broadcast then roll. If you want a seeder, then Brillion makes a good one. I also heard that Frontier (John deeres label) is marketing a nice one. If you use a seeder, then I recommend 2 passes, 90 degrees to each other. 1 pass will do the job, but the grass will come up in rows and IMHO looks crappy. Adding the second pass fills this in and doesn't take nearly as long to fill in and look good. You'll use twice as much seed, but it is worth it.

I am working on a similar project and am trying this method. First I work the area with a harrow rake, tines down, spead the seed with a broadcast spreader, then rework with the harrow rake tines up.

Don't know how well it will work yet, but it has to be better than just throwing seed.

Let us know what you wind up doing.

An FYI for future reference - many of us who review the discussion board from time-to-time from work can't hit eBay - it's not allowed through most corporate firewalls.

Ken,
That is a interesting piece of equipment, I am interested in the 6 ft. one. I have e-mailed for a freight quote on your site.
Thanks for your reply.
