In the master bedroom, the wife wants to add a propane fireplace to a corner in the room.

She want to add a plasma screen tv OVER the fireplace.

I suppose the fire will be (hopefully /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif) at floor level, and the tv's base would be at roughly 5 foot level sitting above fire.

What heat concerns might I have?

For some reason, I have a base feeling of feeling nervous about this idea and I'm not sure why, so this is my first foray into finding out about any effect (if any) heat might have.

That tells me that you don't like the sound of the idea, either. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Personally, I wouldn't put a TV over the fireplace (real, propane or other kind) for two reasons...
1. The light output from the fireplace would be distracting while watching TV. Imagine putting a lamp right under your TV and trying to concentrate on the TV.
2. Like you, I don't like the idea of electronics near a heat source. It will do just fine generating it's own heat from the reciever section. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I work for Philips, we make Flat TV's and I wouldn't do it, didn't do it when I built 15 months ago, and probably wouldn't buy a Plasma anyway. Plasma's have an image burn in problem more than any other display device. Wait until the Pure LCD TV's come out and down in price (we're making 30" and moving to 42" next qtr.). Personally, I'd also look at using an LCD projector (not DLP).

My freinds are always asking, can you get me a deal on a plasma and my first response is, wait until the HD standards settle down and HD is broadcasted standard, then plunk down the bucks for the right technology at THAT time. Solutions today, may not be perfect when this does occur, so I consider anything between now and 3 years, a stop gap unitl real HD is there. That being said, 4" depp TV's are way cool and if can afford it, go for it.

Just my 2 cents.

I wondered about that.
Thanks for the good information. You probably just saved several folks some big $$$.

I certainly would not put a plasma near the fire. I do have a 57" Sony Trinitron XBR HDTV and the technology is constantly changeing, Haveing said that I can NOT possibly ever imagine being with out a HDTV again, you can take my tractor truck and land but You will have a REAL fight if you try to take my home theatre ! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I also have the Jamo 5.1 Digital THX speakers, full monster cables, Denon DVD and Denon AVR5800 amp. I have some serious change invested but not even a small dent in what a plasma system would cost. Dave

Richard, your question had to do with putting a TV over a fireplace. Others have given you good advice on that.

My concern is having a fireplace in a bedroom. Please check with your local building inspections office to see if that is allowed in your area. There are some serious concerns about any type of gas fireplace in a bedroom, especially, when they are added after the house is completed, and may not have adequate ways to carry the combustibles out of the room. I would not recommend a ventless gas fireplace in a bedroom. The only type of gas fireplace acceptable to me in a bedroom would be a sealed unit where there is no way for the fumes to escape into the bedroom.

Again, please check with your local officials to understand the requirements for a fireplace in the bedroom. You might want to also ask your local fire department.

Fireplace in bedroom? I don't see a concern. I have stayed in Hotel Rooms with them.

The also had Garden Tubs and TV's....

Go Richard. The Plasma TV is a bad idea because they are the expensive fad that will fade and they actually do in a few years.

But, Wifey, she has a good head on her shoulders and appreciates the comforts in the greatest room of the house.

Gotta love that............

We have a ventless type fireplace in living room and would use one of the same type.

She loves that she can turn it on and have instant heat and when she turns it off, it cools down immediately.

Hmm... re-read above... almost sounds like me. lol (male bashing) /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
