I've use the plastic welding hot air guns and it's tricky to get PE to bond well even to itself. I try to have another piece handy to press on the molten plastic to smooth it out and help it bond.

One tip for repairing with a glue gun is to reinforce the repair with some cloth. The hot glue never gets very hard but making a composite with cloth will add lots of strength.

A little strip of window screen (metal or polyester) makes a fine lay-up material with hot glue. Also works well with 2 part epoxy on rigid plastics.
