Farmwithjunk,

Be thankful they let the kids out early. We had a very small amount of snow/sleet last winter in the early afternoon. It caused complete chaos. Primary and secondry roads were gridlocked. Some kids never made it home until the next day. They spent the night at school. MANY people had to walk home, stay had hotels if they could, or stay with their cars. It was a disaster.

The problem was the timing of the snow. Since it came down in the afternoon it quickly was compacted into ice. DOT could not get to the snow since it came down in the afternoon and there was so too much traffic. If the snow had happened overnight it would not have been that big of a deal.

There were lots of scared/stress kids and parents trying to get to each other. Some kids got stranded on buses. We got lucky in that I got to my daughter's school and got away without problems. Once I'm about 5 miles west its clear going as long as you have a 4x4 and common, errrr, good sense. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

When I was a kid in Louisville we had a couple of snow storms that but down almost two feet of snow. We went now where for days. We had a couple of bad stroms that shut every thing down. Then the teachers went on strike. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif We had to go well into summer and an extra hour each day to make up the days we missed. THAT STUNK! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Later,
Dan

We didn't get much snow; just a tiny bit, but also just a little bit of freezing rain and sleet, so a thin coat of ice on everything. 14 degrees this morning and 13 forecast for tonight, but a clear sunny day today. However, most schools and a lot of businesses are closed today.

Funny you should mention the yahoo's in their 4X4's. Last year we had a small snow, probably about 4 inches or so but it was slushy and icy too. I ride the train to DC everyday and when everybody got off the train it was like the last day of school!! People were running to their cars tearing out of the parking lot like nuts in their big 4X4's and boy did they get going good. I waited and took my time since I had my little Focus. The only down side was when the dual lane goes to single lane there is usually a back and everybody knows that 4x4's get you going faster but they don't stop any quicker. When I finally got down to the merge area, there were 3 4X4's off the side of the road with front and rear damage.
Don't get me wrong 4x4's are great, I even have one (uh the wife does) but you have to drive them like you have sense.
You ought to see the beltway in DC when it snows. An hour trip can turn into a 6 hour trip easily.
I'm ready for some snow to plow.

( Now don't get me wrong. I'm all in favor of protecting our children. But this is ridiculous! "They" have just called off school, and are now sending home all of the kids in Jefferson County/Louisville city. AND WE HAVEN'T HAD THE FIRST FLAKE OF SNOW!)

I thought only the surrounding area, Washington DC, behaved this way. It is good to know our fellow southerners behave in a similar fashion.

On Monday, our areas first snow, 3-6 inches, on the way to my house I passed four accidents in a ten mile stretch of road.

Schools were closing early that day, and were closed the next day.

I remember when I was younger and we walked to school in....... ahhhhh.... never mind..... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Tlbuser, Your profile states lower part of Md. (St Mary's?)

Well another sort of funny thing if you might have noticed is the local forcasters are now using the "bread meter" in their forcast predictions " this looks like it could be a two loaf storm" ..... Of course I revised it to the "B-M-T" forcast /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I sure all can figure that one out...

Farm, We already had our first snow about 5" on monday afternoon / evening but the next day it was almost gone /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif not enough to play in .... But we are expecting it again tonight , Sooo I think it will be another catagory 2 on the B-M-T scale ....but its colder now and it might stick around a little longer /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Those snows must have been the winters of '77, '78, and '79. ('77 was COLD and snow, '78 was SNOW and cold, '79 was ICE and COLD)

I was home on leave from the Army during the '78 snow. I was at a local bowling alley, watching some friends bowl/drink adult beverages, maybe even part-taking in some of those libations myself, when it all hit. It wasn't even snowing when we walked in. 3 hours later, there was almost a foot on the ground, and still falling. We did the only sensable thing.... We went back in and drank more frosty barley pops. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

A little farther north. Right now, we're close to Port Tobacco. If I ever get some money together, I'll start building in downtown Patuxent City. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Alpena, MI., Thunderbowl, bare butt bowling. Owner bought us a few rounds. Didn't think anybody was stupid enough to do THAT. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Sometimes, having the military send you to strange and faraway lands isn't a good thing for the locals. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Isn't that down there by the nuclear plant? A lady I used to work with doesn't live too far from the plant.
