I think everyone is overthinking the problem. Its not so much that the design is wrong, although it could have put better use of structural steel rather than pipe, but the problem is just the CRAPPY weld. I am surprised that it didnt fall off in transit with that weld. Welding the wedge to the pipe is not that hard. Grind off all the old weld, place it back in the original position and put several passes of 7018 on each side and it will then hold as much as the pipe will stand.

Have to agree with Gary , I don't see the problem just a little grinding and 6 or 8 7018s and you back in business, why make a easy fix difficult?

When I first read the OPs post,. I thought, I auta offer to take the POS of his hands. Dont look that bad to me,
If you know how to grind prep and weld, Your in businsess. I wouldnt design and build one like that, But I think it will split wood just fine.

That second bottle jack splitter would make a good bench press with a little redesigning, some material and a bit of labour. It will never make a labour saving wood splitter.......

I agree, and thanks for supporting my point- it really is a sturdy little splitter.

I just thought I'd suggest an easier method of reinforcement, since that seemed to be the consensus.

Thanks again for all the help. I suppose I'll weld the bottom of the wedge to a 2" receiver tube(1/4 thick), then stick it up from below-between the tubes, and weld to the tubes. The receiver will give me a good way to both brace it and tow it around.
I don't know if my 110 V Miller wire feed is up to the task of the thick wedge. I may have to take it out to a pro...
