"Best guess: it really was an accident. Officer Parrish was at a party being serviced by a woman who was inconveniently not his wife when the “exotic” Ms. Miller became a little too demonstrative and yanked on his gun in its POS soft holster. He may have been drunk, too, not that we’ll ever know for sure since his brothers in blue didn’t administer a breathalyzer test. Cause that could have been awkward, what with the dead body there on the floor and e’rything. Say what you want about the Motor City, but their thin blue line sure sticks together."

Yikes.

Godbee, the police chief, ( and part time minister ) got canned for having relations with subordinates. We have had a long history of goofy things in Detroit, going back 100 years.

When I started on the police department, we were issued .38 revolvers, Colt or S&W depending on which one got the contract that year. But officers were allowed to carry anything they wished on duty as long as it was made by Colt or S&W, .38 or larger. So quite a few officers carried those old 1911 Colt .45s, with one chambered, cocked, and the safety on. Those guns went off in the locker rooms, in the squad cars, in personal cars, etc., but then wouldn't work when needed. I remember at least 2 cases in which an officer would have shot a suspect, if the gun had worked; only one of the cases resulted in an officer's death; the other just resulted in a suspect escaping. And I only remember one case in which an officer was gravely wounded by his partner's .45. Fortunately, most of the "accidental" discharges resulted in either no injuries or minor injuries.

...I would prefer people didn't carry them around me without me knowing.

Why does it make any difference? I mean, if you don't know, there is no gun to worry about as far as you know. And if you do know there is a gun, that is less disturbing to you for some reason? WTH? Sorry, but this almost defies logic.

Hard to understand unless it was being fiddled with. It needs three actions to fire: safety moved to "Off," grip safety squeezed, and trigger pulled. I wonder how many removed the magazine, thought it unloaded, then pulled the trigger, firing the chambered round.

It matters to me because sometimes the gun goes off when you don't want it to. And that puts me in danger which I don't like. At least that's what this story is about.

Well you live in a Big CCW state. How do you know who is carrying?

Still not understanding what the difference is between you knowing about the gun being there or not. The fact that you can't see a gun, or are not aware of it's presence, does not change the fact that it does or does not exist.

It's very likely that the guy that shot the restaurant booth did not have a proper holster. That is what the story is about.

I suppose I could just give them a big hug and see if they go bang!
My only point is I feel carrying guns has some danger which I can do without.

Oh I should have said if I can see someone carrying, I can choose to leave the premises. I've never seen anyone carrying btw.
