Plowing Experience

Steve and Bird are way over my head here, but, wouldn't draft control help is this situation?

Billboe, you'd still want to have the plow adjusted or set up properly, but yes, if your tractor had draft control, it would adjust the depth if the plow were pulling too hard or too easily.

Most 1 or 2 bottom plows we used had a depth adjustment wheel. Thats what was on my 2-16 massey plow that I let go with my old tractor. I also had to adjust the tire inwards in the furrow for proper distance for the plow. But growing up I plowed with a 4 bottom or 4-16 hydraulic john deere plow behind a 70 john deere. Thanks for the pics John. Now that is what I call some serious plowing. I like the fact that the steamer is only turning 260 RPM's

Thank you for the pictures. Very interesting stuff!

A 12 and 14 bottom plow with only 35 or 45 horsepower! /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif/w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif That means those old steam tractors had tons of torque.

I have 20hp and can only use a single bottom plow. Go figure?

I think they used a different way of rating horsepower up until the early 1900s. SAE horsepower instead of brake horsepower maybe? I know that the largest Case steam engine of the time was originally rated as 32 horsepower with the old system. When they changed ratings the same engine was now rated at 110 hp. From this it is probably safe to multiply those numbers by about 3.5 in order to compare with todays horsepower ratings. Also, with those old steam engines weight and torque where larger factors in how much they could pull instead of horsepower.
