John Deere 620, New Holland TC33D
Hi!! This is my first new question for you guys!! I have my dads John Deere 620 that I bought 15 years after his auction so its Deere to me.... I plant about 5 acres a year into food plots. My question is what would make a excellant plow for that tractor???? It has no 3 pt. which I wouldnt mind adding to it and it also is a narrow front, and I'm from southeastern MN so the soil is pretty good but a little rocky. I'm open to all your suggestions!! Thanks!!

4-14" bottoms was pretty common around here for a 620 back in the day. Our soils are lighter than lots of other areas. For 5 acres per year, 3-14"s, 4-14"s or 3-16"s would serve you well.

Adding a 3PT to a 620 will be spendy, but a fully mounted plow is ideal for small plots. Plan on adding front weight as well.

I would go with 3-14" or 3-16", whichever you can find! I had a model 810 JD 3-pt for my 520, 3-14" was too much for it! The 810 is made to be able to add or remove the rear bottom as needed. I went to 2 bottom with the 520 & got along great. We used a 4-16" JD pull plow with our 720D growing up, I later got a model F45, 4-14" 3-pt for it which never worked the 720 very hard.

As Rick said, the 3-pt will handle better in small plots & with a steel tail wheel, you'll have no tires to keep up! ~~ grnspot

As far as adding a 3 point, any thoughts on aftermarket style ones?? They should be plenty good enough for my use, wouldnt they??

Hello Fellow Minnesotan,

I would recommend a 2-16" pull type plow. Three point without draft or position control will make plowing a challenge for a three point plow. A 16" plow has more trash clearance than a 14"; helpful with overgrown foodplots. Get a more modern pull type plow with replaceable shares. Oliver probably made the best, but JD and IHC are good too. In the old days a 620 was probably rated a 3 or even 4 plow tractor. But that was back when they plowed very shallow and very slow, and disked the stocks one or two times before hand. A 2-16" will move right along and make plowing a pleasure. One thing I remember about plowing with the Johnny Two Popper was when the plowing got tough you could almost count the the "pops" as the tractor lugged along.

A 620 should handle a 3-bottom plow in most soils in fourth gear (around 4-1/2 mph). As far as depth, any plow should be able to plow a depth of 1/2 it's width, 14"=7" deep/16"=8" deep, etc.

A trip plow would be advisable if the rocks have much size! Also, most pull plows have limited ground clearance. ~~ grnspot

What makes you think a 620 doesn't have draft OR position control????

Every three point hitch has one or the other (except low-end Asian imported CUT's), a 620 just happens to have both. You get credit for two valid points; a 16" plow has more trash clearance than a 14" , and the OP should look for a modern plow with high speed bottoms such as Oliver Raydex, Deere New Universal, or IH Super Chief. A 2-16" trailer plow is a rare bird indeed, and too small for a 620 in all but the toughest of conditions. A fully trailing plow will be most unhandy for food plot situations as compared to a fully mounted plow.

In my part of Minnesota a JD 620 would have a very difficult time pulling 3-16s at 4 1/2 MPH. It's only around 40 HP. The OP stated that his 620 does not have 3 PT hitch. An add-on/aftermarket 3 pt does not give you draft and position control. Years ago I plowed with a JD 730 diesel and a 3-16 plow. It had all it could handle.

Just my opinion on the 2-16 plow, but based on 100s of hours spent on a plow tractor.

A 620 is very, very likely to have a rockshaft whether or not it has a full 3PT. It has top link draft sensing, that will be there built into the Power-Trol housing. If it hasn't got a rockshaft and Power-Trol, he isn't going to add a 3 point to it without adding the rockshaft and valving. If it has a rockshaft, he can add a Deere, Speeco, or Saginaw hitch and have draft and position control. My comments allowed for different soil types. I have friends that grew up running 620's, I own a 730D, and have plowed thousands of acres in my lifetime as well. My thoughts are no less valid than yours.

What he said.....

Here in Kentucky, we have clay soils. Much of it is average to tough plowing. Growing up, a neighbor had a 620 and a 630. They ran a dairy operation, and grew quite a bit of alfalfa. Anyone who's ever plowed alfalfa sod knows it's just about as tough as it gets. They routinely plowed it with the 620 and 630. They used 4X14" Deere trailer plows (#444's) They never seemed to be over matched. Deere plows of that era (HSS bottoms) were known to be harder to pull than other brands, so a newer 3-point plow should be (could be) EASIER pulling. Granted, plows of that era were generally pulled at speeds of 3-1/2 to 4mph, where more modern plows are generally pulled at speeds of 4-1/2 to 5mph.

I'd go with (at a minimum) 3X16"'s. A 2-bottom plow on a 620 would be a waste of time AND fuel.

For what ever it's worth, I've plowed a few thousand acres over the years myself. Not my first rodeo.....

It would be some pretty tough ground that a good 620 wouldn't pull a 3-bottom plow!

As for alfalfa sod, Dad & my brother once plowed 20 acres of old alfalfa with the 720D & 60 on a 4-16's (chained together)! ~~ grnspot
