Actually, I bought my wife one of those Harbor Freight 'Power Plungers' and it works quite well. Lest than 15 bucks too.

FWIW, I remember watching a video that advised against trying to push a clog out of a drain with a regular plunger. They said it would tend to compact the clog making it harder to deal with. Instead, their recommendation was to seat the plunger on the drain and then yank the clog back out of the drain. You might have to repeat the process, but the idea was to break up the clog. This is the approach I've used for years. The thing that has worked the best for us is having strainers on the bathtub and kitchen sink that work well and are easy to remove and clean instead of letting all that junk get in the drain pipe.
