Well, you could always try this..

suggestion well taken.

When I put the split wheels back together with the new shiny bolts, should I leave the nuts to the outside like they were before, or should I have the bolt heads showing to the outside? 

I'm thinking it's just a matter of preference, but I'm wondering what the rest of you have to say about it.

i think bolt heads looks real nice esp if they were coated with paint or fake spray chrome.

I actually have some of that fake spray chrome.

Maybe if the nickel plating doesn't look shiny enough, I can pull them back out and paint them chrome.

Well, My concerns about the tires being too big were right. I test fitted the first two tires I mounted and they rub on each other.

The new tires and painted rims sure look good, though. Too bad they render the trailer useless.

The axles on this trailer are torsion axles. They are both going the same direction now. If I flip one I'll get an additional 8 inches between the two tires.

That will be plenty of clearance, and I can do it such that the extra 8 inches is toward the back of the trailer which will actually put me closer to the recommended 60/40 split.

The problem now is that to flip the axle like I want to requires loosening 6 bolts. Every one of the 6 bolts is permanently fused due to years of corrosion. I've tried penetrating oil, heat, hammer, bigger hammer, air impact wrench, and finally a 24 inch pipe wrench hooked to a 2 ton comalong with full tension combined with some encouragement from a 2 pound sledge.

Next trick is a skinny wheel.

What you are going through all the time. In your case you are just fixing up your old trailer but I can not tell you how many times I price a new trailer to a customer. They then get on used off Craigslist or some other site and then run into all this fun stuff. They end up spending what it would have cost them to just buy the new trailer with warranty.

I know. It seems like I can never do things the easy way. Every step of the way I keep going through the analysis if it's worth the expense or not.

So far, though, I've only got the $45 into the used tires, and $8 into the dust caps that were too big. I'm pretty sure that if my tire recycler friend can't find me the right tires he'll either give me my money back for these or credit me for something else I'm going to need soon enough.

It probably seems like I have a lot more time into it than I really do because I get to work on it for a few hours a week, and then I spend the next week complaining on TBN before I get time at home to work on it again.

Ox/Acetylene is on the list of wants somewhere down below a new trailer with brakes and air bags for the truck.

The skinny wheel on a grinder is definately not a first choice, but may take 10 minutes instead of 5.

I'm still doing some figuring if that's going to work like I want it. Turning things such that the rear axle is further back may interfere with the tilt bed. I learned from the "too big tires" thing, and I don't want to do all the work this time before I figure out that it's not going to work.

better, 4" angle grinder with a cutter blade. Much less cool down time.

Tires touching? Measure twice, mount once!!

Diamond, it's a dump trailer, one reason to keep it.
