Well, we have not been able to get a lot done lately. Busy schedule but hopefully things are slowing down now. We have got the roof pretty well framed. The metal should be going on next time we can work on it.

Hi Matt,

I would not say I am an expert by any means, but I can tell you what we did. We used a line level. To compensate for sag from the weight of the line, we stretched it between a few poles then put a nail partially in and stretched it again.

Someone else here may have a much better method. Good luck with your build!

Nick
I'm not an expert, but have used a few surveying tools and built some buildings. My Grandad taught me to level with a couple of garden hoses hooked together and filled w/ water, if it's not freezing. Water seeks it's own level. I've since moved on to a spool of clear aquarium air tubing and a jug with colored (food coloring) water in it. It's about $5 for 25', you can fit as many pieces as you need together for a pittance, works in bright daylight, doesn't need batteries.

For your barn you would need 3 or 4 pieces.

I suppose you could use antifreeze if it got cold.

It works well as long as there are no bubles traped in the tube.

Never had a problem with a garden hose, but with the narrow tube all I do to set it up is start suction on 1 end and let it fill,
I agree if you mess up and let air bubbles in, cut the tube, or hold part in the middle way to high it won't work.

I laid out batter boards for my 30x45 building last weekend, and I have a 5 gallon pail full of water with a hose barb near the bottom, and 50' of clear tubing. After I was done, I checked them all with a 6' level, and they were all dead on. Just set it on a table when filling until water is running out the end of the hose to make sure all the bubbles are out.

Well, we completed the roof yesterday. Feels like a major step toward completion.

Not being pushy at all. We busted our butts so hard and so long in the heat of a tn summer that I got a little burn out. After we got it roofed we have slacked off. Been back out there maybe 1/2 a dozen times or so to work since then. When we have went, we have been digging dirt out of where my future basement is going to be and moving it inside the garage to get it leveled up. Not real exciting...

I am hoping to get my motivation back real soon.

thanks for your interest!

Small update. We decided to start working on the sides while weather was nice. We got one side covered in OSB today. Went nice and smooth once we got into the swing of things.

Sorry for the low quality, only had my phone and not my 15 megapixel DSLR, makes a difference...

We got the two sides we have OSB on covered with Tyvek today. We wanted to get this done because we are expecting some rain the next couple of days. This stuff goes up pretty easy, nice change from the previous steps.

We have slowed down for the winter and holidays around here but we went out today and put one of the windows in.

I hope everyone had happy holidays!

Make sure you put bichuthane around the windows on both sides and top. Not on the bottom. Tyvek is awesome, however it does not breathe so if any water gets behind it the first place it causes rot and mold is around the windows due to moisture in cold weather.

Bichuthane, in strips 4-6inches side, will prevent this from happening. Put the side strips on first then overlap the top. You will be years ahead on rot and moisture.

Do the same around doors. Do not seal the bottoms as this will allow rain/moisture to escape.

Good looking barn. I am building one too but not as far along as you. Winter showed up here in force so have to wait for spring now. Looks good.
