Great, bring your handguns!

Insinuating, sarcastically, that the combination of guns and alcohol could not possibly result in any other result than people (your hated 'gun nuts') shooting one another.

Ever hear of such a thing as moderation?

Moderation in shooting means I am not a pre-programmed robot whose natural inclination is to kill people if only someone puts the mechanism in my hands.

Moderation in drinking means (GASP!) that I can have a drink without getting falling down drunk.

I am not 'impaired' after one sip of alcohol. Nor am I compelled to shoot someone when I have a gun in my hand, whether I've had a drink or not.

Personal responsibility is a wonderful thing but apparently some believe it is nothing more than an abstract concept.

Bob, I found this info about accidental deaths amoung children 0 to 18 years of age. This was the only statistics I found (quick search) that didn't involve homicide and suicide.

And you've got to watch statistics concerning "children" involved in homicide. The Brady bunch uses gangbanger killings (normally involving mid teens to 20's) to skew the data.

Roy, I ran across some interesting statistics but I didn't bookmark it. It got down to the nitty gritty on pre teen and teen shootings.

If anyone is interested I'll try to find it. If you all want to let sleeping dogs lie, so be it.

I always feel that we could have a beer together after we are done discussing a topic. Its an adult perspective on things that many reasonable people share.

One of the best classes I took in High School was called Comparative Religions. We not only learned and discussed other religions, we went on field trips to their places of worship and talked with their leaders. It was a real eye opener as to how other people think and how they feel about you and your beliefs. It was also reassuring to see that most of these "different" people are not that different at all. I find the if you can have a friendly, civil discussion about any topic, everyone ends up with a better perspective of how other people view things and usually they mean you no harm or insult.

So, lighten up folks. Talk it out over the pickle barrel and learn about your neighbors' views on guns and tractors (but not politics and religion :D). You may learn something interesting. :)

I have mixed emotions on allowing teachers to carry guns in the classroom. I have no problem with a certified and trained person carrying a gun, however, I do have a hard time justifying teachers at elementary schools carrying guns. Just because a person can shoot a gun does not mean they have the mental capacity to deal with situations where they may indeed need to shoot someone.

I think there should be a more proactive solution rather than a reactive one. No I don't have the answer and maybe I am an old idealist, but I think allowing teachers to administer disciplinary corporal punishment in the schools would be a dang good place to start.

As far as having the mental capacity...well, anyone who carries a CCW better have the mental capacity. I think anyone with a sense of morality (not talking about religion here at all) would have hesitation about really using their weapon. In a situation, using a weapon would have to be strictly reactive (that is, one knows the intruder is there to do bodily harm). Again, carrying a weapon would have to be a voluntary thing on the teachers' parts.

As far as corporal punishment...I've no problem with that (I'm old enough to remember it in schools), but in today's society and the lack of respect for the teaching profession, I'm not so sure corporal punishment couldn't initiate a violent situation.

Speaking of the lack of respect for the teaching profession...anybody read about the dean of MIT having to resign because of a falsified resume? That's a big help, isn't it?

Wow.

Amazing thread. I think I will start a new direction. I'll leave gun control out of it. Just go to human nature.

Do normal people with background checks by the government crack?

Simple question really. Gets to the heart of this matter

Of course they do, how would getting a background check prevent someone from 'cracking' (whatever that means).

Bob, I agree with you 110% (this time) ;)

The sad thing is, as we've all seen, it only takes one person to get a thread headed the wrong direction. I hope it keeps going but I'm just another poster.

I'll buy the beer. Anyone else want to join us? :D

Roy, i agree.

When i was taking a gun training course in prep to get my CCW, the trainer, ( was the long time firearms instructor for the local sheriff's dept ) said something near the end of the class that made the few of us inthe class really stop and think.

After going over the law, and the safety handling practices, then inspection of the guns were were using, then a practicle shooting test, he sat us all down, and while he was prepairing our paperwork, he looked at each one of us and said "Now, pretty soon you will be licensed to carry a gun for self defense.. that means.. at some point in your life.. you may be put in a position where you will have to kill someone to protect yourself or another person.. before you take this peice of paper from my hand.. make sure you are prepaired for those emotional consequences.." He said more stuff.. but those first few words really did stick with me.

This is one of those social responsibility issues,.. and I believe that most law abiding gun owners DO take it very seriously that they have to carry responsibly and may one day have to take action.
