Poly closure foam for metal roofing?

I picked up some metal today and asked the supplier about vented/foan strips, and was shocked at the price. Plus, they said they had to be replaced every few years as they didn't last long. So I left the store without them.

Is this foam really necessary for a metal roof?

Unfortunately, usually yes. It keeps wind blown rain and snow out. For something like a pole barn I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Agree with that, I had snow deeper inside the building than outside one year. It seemed like that little crack created some kind of wind tunnel that just blew more snow in the building. Probably just bad luck with direction and location.

I've wondered if you couldn't use that spray foam to reach up in the spaces and fill it with foam. As long as it doesn't ooze out the bottom and look hillbilly, seems like it would be a good solution.

I think this is exactly what I have been looking for but not sure. I am trying to seal the gaps between the tin and slates on a pole structure that I am renovating. Does any one have a picture of this after it is applied to structure ?

Also I went to foamtapes.net but I really don't know what I am looking for.
The exact name of the product and size would be of great help. Really have been lost on trying to figure out what to use.
Thanks
Bill

I didn't take any picures. I used 1" x 1" ether foam tape, found under "weatherstripping". There may be better choices, but most of them don't come as thick as I needed. If your ridge needs to be vented, make sure you get an open cell foam like the ether.

Suppose you have 3/4 inch ribbed metal. Why not bend a 3/4 lip on the top of the metal under the ridge cap? That would seem to keep the rain out pretty well with no foam....

For me the ridge is not a problem. I have not checked it closely since it is so high. I think what ever venting I have on the ridge I will leave so it can vent.
I also plan on having two large gable vents on each end.

I think I found some wire mesh and with the foam can seal along the sides of the building. This should prevent the collection of ,pine straw, birds, and insects of all descriptions out of my insulation.
( I am actually removing all the old insulation the guy had above the rooms because it was such a mess)
I plan on starting over by reinsulating and sealing out the critters !!

How would you bend ribbed roofing?

Cut on the flat at the rib and then bend up the flat with a set of tin bending pliars (about $12.00 at HF on sale). I suppose you could cut off the rib that would then stick out and seal the cut if you felt it was necessary.

Now I see what you’re saying. That would probably work to some degree. But, the rib walls aren’t at 90 degrees to the flats, so you’d still have small openings. I think it sounds like too much work for me. :D
