i have a small pond about 1/5 an acre if that big. Deepest point is about 8 feet. Kind of kidney shape. i have channel cats and blue gills. The fish are 2+ years old. Last summer I had a big catfish kill.I finnally got power to the back and now I need to come up with an aeration system. Will a 3000gph pump sraying water be enough? Or do I need to spend the big bucks on a air pump system? I am surprized at how much pond aeration cost.

I installed a Vertex system in my 2.5 acre pond last year. My fish are quite happy. I've had fish kills in the past (My fault, too much pond dye). Ted over at Pond Boss will help you out.

Good luck

I just use an old shallow well pump with a lawn sprinkler{type that shoots a stream and goes back and forth} I have had good luck, and it was cheap. I have never had fish kill and it keeps the nasty algae down. The pond I use this setup on is about an acre, it does not have a stream of fresh flowing water either. I did check into the aeraters, and figured there had to be a easier way to aerate then selling off my kidneys to do so. I would believe and easy aerator could be made with an old pool pump and some cheap PVC pipe. Craigs list has pool pumps quite often very cheap.

Pond Boss forum is overloaded with information on this very subject. You can even meet familiar names there;)

Anyway. I aerate my pond with a fountain from Sugar creek. The reason was wife-the-best-of-all to justify the expense:D The fountain runs on and off every day for two hours at a time for few years now. The pond is full of fish - since I stock it yearly and also float feed every day. When the summer gets hot and water lower I change the timing and make the fountain run from 11 PM till 6AM - colder air means more oxygen and less evaporation.

I am thinking about adding a compressor and aerate more, because the fountain rotates water from cca 2 feet and not deeper. Recommended compressors are gast and such - like Gast 0523 - and I have the power and small cinder block cabinet next to the pond ready for it, but didn't buy the compressor yet.

Hope this helps.
