have alot of room behind the house if i need to stock pile fill, that doesn't worry me to much.

good question about the clay... how would you ever figure that out untill you get into it?

i have dug a few test holes, maybe 12-14 foot deep. The up hill side of the pond you hit shale after only 5-6 feet. The down hill end i never hit shale only chunks of lime stone.

There are alot of ponds around me (attached) got to assume that would hit what i need to keep water in it...

thanks SpringHollow, i will call them and find out.

Glad to see all the ponds around you, that is a good sign. Ask Eddie Walker about moving spoils any distance. I assume that is your backhoe in the photo. Great start but not the right equipment to move hundreds of yards any distance.

Have you checked out Pond Boss Magazine: Welcome , they have a forum with some knowledgeable people on pond building.

Good luck and keep us up to date with the project.

Sounds like a great project and will go really nice with your house (very nice by the way). One question I have for you is, how do you know your 'pond' will hold water? Someone just mentioned clay as you are going to need a lot of it in order to keep it filled especially come July/August in a typical year. Or do you not care if it drops 3-4ft? I'm just curious as I want to do something similar albeit not near my house for stocking trout so I can get back to fly fishing. My concern is whether or not I will have clay and it will hold water. Test holes have been positive but it's always a risk. Also do you have your own equipment or are you hiring out?

Looking forward to more posts/pics as you move forward.
