would a pond scoop work for picking up larger rocks? thought that might be easier than maneuvering the rock onto a truck hood and then dragging. Also thinking about using one to dig out a small area for a shallow pond (20x20). ANd also looks like it would be good for hauling firewood.

Any thoughts and suggestions would be appreciated

It should work a lot better than the truck hood.
It will do what you describe. It's a nice implement if you don't have a loader. For firewood a trailer will hold a lot more but the scoop will be okay.

I made a rear bucket 3 pth from a front loader bucket that was alittle worn. I have worked it to death. Mine has a hydraulic cylinder to tip it. There is an advantage to rear buckets for smaller tractors in that the weight is kept on rear wheels which are the strongest on smaller machines.
I was using it last weekend to move about 2 cubic yards of quality top soil from a stock pile to landscape the front of the property. The distance I had to travel was about 1000 feet each way. I had to move slow as I did not want to break the 3 pth.
It is hard on the neck when you are using the tractor with the bucket to self load itself's with dirt etc. But on the plus side it is easier than shoveling.
WARNING WARNING Do not drive up forward an incline with a load in the rear bucket or you will do a wheelie ( I did ) as I mentioned in the post repy back to someone who flipped his kubota. Back up the hill.
When I am loading dirt set the bucket to shear dirt , then pull away as it is tempting to raise the 3 pth and create excess stress.
I have the bucket on a 26 HP kubota.
To move larger rocks just get the stone in the bucket and let it slide on the ground.

Thorn, Here is what I use. This is one tool that I wouldn't be with out here on the Devil's backbone that the glacier left behind for me. I have dug out more rocks with this thing, than I care to think about. :( Many at the lift capacity of the loader. It is a beast. Can be used for digging out rocks, and carrying/placing them, digging out trees for planting/moving, cutting a ditch, and a host of other uses. Love this tool! Moved all the rocks you see in the bridge pic.
I'll try a link.

Well Boone, you can drop back to 2 since that scoop isn't a tumblebug.:D If you ever had to move dirt with a tumblebug you'd never forget that experience.

This link shows a tumblebug.

Please read post 7 AND 8 and you'll see how I came to that conclusion.

Saw it in a TBN member"s signature and asked him.
Thanks for correction.

Be careful if you load the scoop in reverse. The 3 pt arms are designed for pull loads, not push loads and it is possible to overload them.

Before I had a loader, I used mine a lot. I even dug a little "pondlet" with and the box blade.
