Ponds?

That is nice!

Are you going to line it? I have seen large ponds that were lined, and then soil put on top of the liner for plants to grow in.

What is your water supply? All of our water, short of winter rain, comes from our well. I would not want to supply anything larger with the water source we have...

Thanks Ken, thats what I wanted to see!

In the bottom I want to build a pond in it is kinda of sandy and it is sub irrigated, also there would be alot of run off from the large hills around it. Would it hold water or would it have to have a clay base? The place is not all sand but I don't think its clay either.

The smaller upper pond is filled totally by surface water off of my property. I figure about 7-10 acres run into it. I just went along with a shovel and built a small levies / diversion ditch to make the water go towards the pond. It seems to work.

It was interesting as the upper pond had a good bit of sand in it. At first we would get a hard rain and I would have 2 feet or water in it. But, within an hour or two it would be gone. I figured I would have to get it lined or find some good clay. But, my old farmer friend told me to dump grass clipping in it for a month or two so I did. It made a heck of a nasty mess but it ended up turning into a layer of slime that made a great seal. It took a few months till it would hold but now its fine. Will try this on the lower pond when I am done if it does not hold water.

I would think in this part of the country with the 35+ inches of rain we get if you build a pond it will eventually fill. I may have to get a pump for the bigger one as I want good quality water in it for fish and swimming. The surface water quality may not allow that all of the time

Here's some pics of my pond. As I stated earlier, it's 150x400, and I'm just salvaging the topsoil with my FEL.

Here's a wide shot taken from the deepest corner, about 3 feet right now. The wet spot is the "sump" where all the water collects for "automatic" siphoning into a nearby canal.

It's good to have a little help from my son, who is on Christmas break. The dirt piles are bigger than they look!

The deep end from inside the pond, showing a ramp. I have ramps in each corner. Digging is not the problem, hauling the dirt 100's of feet is the problem!

Merry Christmas to all!

Come and get all you want. I'll even supply sandwiches and lemonade. (or maybe hot cocoa would be better today)

I had 2 John Deeres and my NH in there a few weeks ago, looking like 3 big ants working on an ant hill. We were piling up dirt and loading small trailers. One neighbor made a huge pile o fdirt in his field, but you can hardly notice it missing from the pond. 1" of dirt dug=134 yards!

Merry Christmas to all!

Getting any white stuff down your way? White XMas in Acadiana makes me wonder what's next.

We got a few big puffy flakes and a little sleet. Nothing more than white roofs. Thing is, it's so cold for so long it's sticking real good. We may get some more tonight.

Merry Christmas to all!
