Really nice work, it's been fun to watch your progress. I'd definitely add the roll bar!

I don't want to hijack the thread. But there is something for inspiration. Jeep made in Philippines. It usually has Toyota or Isuzu mechanicals. The sheetmetal is either hot zink or stainless steel. No heat or AC.

Philippine Jeepney - Philippine Jeepney History

One guy told me they run between 3000 to 6000 USD new. 1500 if you supply your own engine. About 1100 USD to ship from Philippines to USA port.

Turned out great! Excellent job Gearhead, that thing will be fun running around your trail, and you can take a few friends with.

I think you should add the roll cage, just for the cool factor if nothing else...

I love it. With chains or mudders that'd go. A little wide for trails around here but very coll.

Thanks Buggs! I'm trying to sell it for pretty much what I've got into it... but so far no luck. That's ok. I could use the cash, but don't mind keeping it either.

For it to be capable it needs a 2" lift, weld the rear, and taller gears... and I'm not willing to put $1,000 into it. It does great if you can keep your speed and rpms up... but struggles when things are slow and rough.

I'd like to try a budget 1/4T truggy next. :)

I would like (at some point) to take a 4x4 Ford Ranger or similar size small druck drivetrain, replace the engine, transmission and tcase with the engine/ transaxle out of a FWD car (older Civic perhaps?), chop the frame ahead of the engine, bob the back and put a dump bed on it...
Not to make it street legal, but to have a offroad vehicle that can haul more than the RTV can.

I just e-mailed someone on kijiji who's got a pair of Rockwell axles and a divorced t-case... looking for trades... man, that would be ideal. I'd throw those under a $500 2wd S10... I can get 38" Michelin XMLs for $60 each all day long....weld the rear... cheap woods beater.

There is a used car place here that sells Japanese mini-trucks. Most are 4WD and many are dumpers...some with 4-passenger seating and dump beds and road legal...with a footprint about the size of a 4-passenger UTV. Sadly, they are not a "poor man's" vehicle, typically costing $6k to $9k (for a 15 to 20 year old vehicle!).

Yup, we have 'em too. I've recently heard that insurance for them is crazy high...

Instead of doing all that, why not just remove the rear drive shaft, instant front wheel drive only, and with a tougher front axle/suspension. Or is it a weight reduction/compactness you are looking for by going to fwd?

Sorry if I was unclear, the FWD transaxle would go in place of the transfer case so you would still have 4wd, but a lighter engine and a lower top speed.
Could probbaly have the same effect by locking the transfer case into 4L.

Very cool! Looks like you put alot of work into that. My one regret is that I was too quick to toss the windshield/ roof and doors. It sure is a PITA to have to cover it with a tarp every time. If I had the garage space it wouldn't be an issue.

I just found and read your thread, what a set of skills you have ! Great job I do a lot on my own as well but never as nice as this maybe someday ha ha. Great work thanks for sharing. Jeff

Thank you very much Jeff! I appreciate the kind words. I just did the best I could with the knowledge, tools, and materials I had, hoping to get better. LOL Practice, practice, practice.

I, too, just discovered your postings. Fantastic job with that little 4X4. Like many I have the land and a tractor but can't/won't afford an UTV. They're just so expensive. Terrific job creating your own. It appears that you have great welding skills too. Bummer to sell it. Might I ask how much you have invested in it? plus a million man hours obviously. Terrific project.....and thank you so much for taking the time to share it with us.

Thank you!

I can't remember exactly... but I think I had something like $1,200 into it and sold it for $1,500 I'm getting better at re-couping material costs at least. LOL I'd consider that a win. Had some fun with it and gained some fab experience.

Not sure if I mentioned it earlier, but for this to have been decent off road it would have needed the rear locked (welded for free), a couple inches lift ($200ish), lower gearing ($650sih), and better tires (???) More then I was willing to spend. It was great for gravel roads and the like.
