{I would like (at some point) to take a 4x4 Ford Ranger or similar size small druck drivetrain, replace the engine, transmission and tcase with the engine/ transaxle out of a FWD car (older Civic perhaps?), chop the frame ahead of the engine, bob the back and put a dump bed on it...
Not to make it street legal, but to have a offroad vehicle that can haul more than the RTV can.}
Instead of doing all that, why not just remove the rear drive shaft, instant front wheel drive only, and with a tougher front axle/suspension. Or is it a weight reduction/compactness you are looking for by going to fwd?

Sorry if I was unclear, the FWD transaxle would go in place of the transfer case so you would still have 4wd, but a lighter engine and a lower top speed.
Could probbaly have the same effect by locking the transfer case into 4L.

Very cool! Looks like you put alot of work into that. My one regret is that I was too quick to toss the windshield/ roof and doors. It sure is a PITA to have to cover it with a tarp every time. If I had the garage space it wouldn't be an issue.

I, too, just discovered your postings. Fantastic job with that little 4X4. Like many I have the land and a tractor but can't/won't afford an UTV. They're just so expensive. Terrific job creating your own. It appears that you have great welding skills too. Bummer to sell it. Might I ask how much you have invested in it? plus a million man hours obviously. Terrific project.....and thank you so much for taking the time to share it with us.

I can't remember exactly... but I think I had something like $1,200 into it and sold it for $1,500 I'm getting better at re-couping material costs at least. LOL I'd consider that a win. Had some fun with it and gained some fab experience.
Not sure if I mentioned it earlier, but for this to have been decent off road it would have needed the rear locked (welded for free), a couple inches lift ($200ish), lower gearing ($650sih), and better tires (???) More then I was willing to spend. It was great for gravel roads and the like.
