I vote for the acorn theory....
The oaks in my woods are so heavy with mast right now the deer are just standing under the trees with their mouths open...
The other day I shut my tractor down to grease it, and a breeze dropped a bunch of acorns on the tin roof of my container / barn....
It sounded like I was back in Baghdad...I darned near ducked under the tractor before I remembered the deer around here are pacifists....
...sure was glad Precious Bride wasn't there to see that one....!
There is also a fairly big deadfall limb under a nearby oak that has had the bark fall away....and when the acorns fall on it, it makes a sort of a popping sound like you have described.

...the Sasquatch theory sounds pretty good to me too...
