Portable 55 gallon diesel fuel storage

A friend stopped by after cleaning out a storage room at his self storage facility and had a couple of Mack Truck frame mount fuel tanks that were new and never installed and was taking them off to his barn attic in the hopes of a future use. I suggested that we make them into fuel transfer tanks with a set of caster wheels mounted below for easy mobility in the shop. I made one and have used it for the past eight years or so. The tank stores up to 50 gallons and is extremely handy to move around. I used to have a skid-mounted 100 gallon tank but everyone could see it outside my garage. Decided that indoor was safer and more secure given the old 'out of sight, out of mind' approach. I'll take some pics tomorrow while waiting for my delivery and post 'em up here.

So I used it for the first time the other day and there was ALOT of junk left in the MR. Funnel when it was done. Glad I used it or that crap would have been added to my tractors fuel tank. However the MR. Funnel was slower n **** and not fun to use, I ended up making quite the mess. This has me wanting to add a filter to the set up right behind the nozzle. Its 3/4 NPT. will this rotary pump be able to put out enough pressure to force the fuel through a filter? Anybody got a link to a cheap filter that I could easily add to this set up?

Not sure if this thread went to cannons or back to the 55-gallon diesel storage.

I'm looking for the 55-gallon fuel storage too.

I was at an older farm that had an old oil furnace tank atop of a steel rack 7ft high. It used simple gravity with two shout-off valves. The tank could hold about 500 gallons. I thought about just placing the 55-gallon drum up on a steel rack like below and gravity feed the fuel to the tractor tank. NorthernTool has one for $1K. That is nuts for a 55-gallon metal or HDPE plastic tank and some welded angle iron.

That was the original plan. I was going to use this set up and just raise the drum onto the metal stand that I already have. Its a rectangular flat top though as it a really old play set. However in my county you have to have more than 10 acres to have on site fuel storage like that so I figured it would just be better to keep the stuff inside. That's why I put the drum upright and on a dolly.

Here is my set up. Have more $$ in the pallet than the whole tank and pump set up. With fuel prices falling, I'm going to sell the kids and get the tank filled. Free delivery if I buy 100 gallons.

I didn't end up buying that one.... I bought one that was a bit cheaper. I figure I will not have to replace the filter for almost a decade at 100 gallons a year.

The cheaper Goldenrod may not get water. Condensation is always a problem for us that use minimum fuel but store large amounts.
A few dollars now may save lots later, JMHO

Long term storeage of diesel brings up issues of algee growth... for that reason, a couple 5 gallon cans when I need them works for me.

Just because you have 55 gallon capacity doesn't mean you have to fill it... my dad used to get the 25-30 gallons we would use in a summer each spring in his drum and just used cans thru the winter if that got used up.

I dont think i will have MUCH condensation. I plan on putting a blanket around this one as well to just help a little bit, but its stored inside. I have yet to see very much condensation on anything in that barn so I doubt it will be a huge problem.
