My MIL had one, she couldn't stand it. The problem was noise. At least with a window unit, most of the noise is outside of the home. She still has the portable but won't use it. They do cool down the room. BTW, the condensate goes out through the exhaust hose via a smaller rubber hose.
I have 3 for backup at work and about 8 to 9 hours and the on board condensate tank is full... for the one I sometimes run overnight I have a 5 gallon water cooler jug that works... still need to empty it regularly.
The local Home Depot had window units at $99 ea on special last week and you should be able to find a selection around the $200 range... much less then the portables.
