Has anyone tried converting a portable"tent garage"?I have a
18x28 with the cover on it which works will for what it is,I was planning on building a real garage in the spring,I went to the "qickshelter"mfg the other day and he wasnt sure of the dead load and snow load,my thought was to have them build me the frame work for a 20x32 and have it built 2 ft on center instead of 4 ft on center, with 2 inch pipe this should be very strong,I could use foam insullation between the 2x2 strapping,I was going to install it on blacktop,I wanted to use strapping across the metal rafters then put metal roofing over that,I was going to frame in the end walls and put in oh doors, and 1/2 inch plywood siding,This
would proubally cost 1/3 of the cost of a real garage,In my mind it would be still considered portable,.no permit,ect-any thoughts???SHIFTY

Hey Shifty,

I was looking for one last year also. Thought these guys made a pretty good one http://www.coveritshelters.com but I just never followed up on it as my needs changed. They talk a lot about snow loads, anchoring methods etc. Check it out.

RE: the "CoverIt" temporary shelters...

I have the small model (12' wide x 20' Long x 8' high). It's pretty well made, heavy duty material etc, and the anchors are certainly substantial (I think the anchors are 18" or 24" long). We live up on the side of a hill, with a good strong prevailing wind, and I don't worry at all about the shelter moving.

My wife made me get BEFORE I got my li'l (JD4100) mule, bless her heart. Since then I found an article discussing the improvement in resell and maintenance you get by keeping a tractor out of the weather, and the small cost of the shelter will be more than made up by the savings in maintenance, etc.

Of course, we then started getting implements to go with it, and quickly outgrew the shelter. /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif I'd suggest that with any shelter you might get, get one larger than you think you'll need - I guarantee that the space will get used !

I'm not familiar with the other brands - don't know how thick of material used, etc.

Hope this helps . . .
