Portable Generators

We lost power Wednesday night at 11pm. Many in NH were without power. Except for the time finding a bad fuse on my gen, we were running the house within a few mins with our setup. The power came back late this morning. Made for an interesting Thanksgiving, especially seeing my gas grill wouldn't play nice but we got it done. 2 crock pots and the microwave running non-stop. We added an electric skillet which tripped the overload on the gen...oops. We didn't cancel though. :D

Well done! A Thanksgiving to remember. And now you also have bragging rights!

Howdy,
Some things are done in the world which are not safe. Just because you can do things, does not make it right.

A interlock is not going to break the bank. Things are engineered for a reason. A 20 amp circuit calls for 12-2 wire, why? because the copper lines need to be that size to work properly. Can you get buy with 14-2 wire, um, kinda, I would not want to put my life on the line with it.

A interlock does just that. It makes it so only one input of power can be on. No, it is not rocket science. I bet if your electric company knew how you back-feed without proper interlock, they have the absolute right to disconnect you from the grid. I mean totally disconnect you. Its not a lawyer thing, it the agreement you have with your electric company.

I have a thread which covers some various Generator Transfer Switch Connection Choices

It does not matter what state your in, or what country. There are proper ways to do things.

BTW NH code says the generator has to be at least five feet from a building and 10' from the fuel tank, not sure if it is more if the building is inhabited.

The NH fire marshal 'recommends' 10' from buildings, and 5' from openings for permanent installations. What NH 'code' are you referring to?
