Can anyone tell me if there is some type of an adjustment that can be made to the position control to make it smoother and easier to operate on my TC-40D? Mine seems to take an excess of hand pressure to go from the raise/lower position for the 3-point. This really makes small adjustments almost impossible to make without bumping the knob with the palm of my hand. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif I have lubed all the linkages and looked in my shop manual but I see no reference to this type of a condition.

Pineridge,

I had to adjust mine on my TC29D. I don't know if it is the same or not but follow your link to right where it goes into the tractor. There you should see a cotter key that you can take out. Take the key out and then loosen the nut there about a half a turn and then put the key back in. You will notice a major difference. I think it is the same on your tractor also.

We often use a product similar to WD-40 and spray on the friction points to help loosen controls.

Use murph's method and your problem should be solved. I did that to my TC40 and also had a problem with the lever rubbing the sides of the plastic slot the lever goes thru.........I got under the fender with a crescent wrench and gave the flat sides of the lever a minor twist so the lever cleared the slot and ran down the middle without rubbing the sides..........had to do the same with the 2-4wd lever too...........TOM

Murph thanks for the advice. I had to pull the right rear tire to get the mangled cotter pin out to the castle nut but once that was done I easily backed the nut off 1/2 turn. Once I got everything back together operation is now as smooth as a babys rear. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Pineridge,

Glad it worked out ok for you. I did not have to remove my tire but I know if I had the jack to do it I sure would have because it was tough getting in there. I did get mine with only a few 4 lettered words.

Mike,

I am so glad you brought this subject up.. My 3PH lever is really stiff too, now I know that there is a solution! (hoping that the class II is the same as the class III....)

Kris I think they are all about the same as far as this little problem goes. If you can't get the cotter pin out going at it from the back of the tractor you may be faced as I was with pulling the right rear tire. It's easy after that and 1/2 turn counterclockwise on the castle nut made all the difference in the world. Let us know how you make out Kris. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I actually did my work from the front of the tire. But like I said I did have to use a few four lettered words. Taking the tire off would make a big difference if you have the tools to do it.

Murph I used that same terminology when I tried for the pin from the back of the tractor. I just could not sneak it out with one hand, so I opted to pull the tire. I'll just bet Kris is using that same language fixing his right now. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

So, after playing in the snow for a while, I decided to try this.. I did end up taking the wheel off, mainly because I didn't feel like getting wet roling around under the tractor... Getting the wheel off is not that hard, but getting a loaded R4 with tire chains back on is a bit of a PITA.

I am not sure how far I backed the nut, I kept backing till it felt 'right'. What a difference this makes. The lever is much smoother. Too bad they dont come like this from the factory.

Thanks again Mike, and all of the others who posted tips, and images. I have a few pics, I'll get them posted up a little later..

Hey guys, you don't need to thank me. I got this information here on TBN. I have been helped by many people and I will continue to help others if I have the answer.

Glad it worked out for all of you.

Re: Position Control Lever Like Buttah!

I'll thank you anyway. I'd also like to thank the many others who've contributed.

Mine has been stiff since I've had it and I thought that one day I'd get around to it. Today was the day! After reading several questions about how long it took and whether or not to pull the wheel, I decided to give it a go and time myself while doing it.

After looking under it, I quickly decided to pull the wheel.

It took a total of 20 min. Here's the break down.
5 min to jack it up, pull the wheel, roll it out of the way.
6 min to pull the cotter pin, make the adjustment, replace pin.
9 min to replace wheel, install and torque bolts, put away tools.

I probably could have done it quicker but I started the clock when I walked out to the tractor. I didn't bring any tools beforehand so the time includes fetching tools. I also use a 3-increment torque sequence along with a final torque check once the jack was removed.

Here's the list of tools I used.
2 ton floor jack.
22mm 1/2" drive socket (wheel studs)
1/2" drive 10" extension
1/2" drive long handled ratchet
1/2" drive torque wrench
4" needle nosed pliers (straightening cotter)
6" needle nosed Vise Grip pliers (pulling cotter)
10" adjustable wrench (adjust castle nut)

Good luck to all those future adjusters out there. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Position Control Lever Like Buttah!

Great timing on this post guys! I just spent 12 hours blowing snow and was thinking how sticky my 3ph lever is. I played with the control knob that governs how fast the hitch drops because mine would go down with a bang or really jerky if you tried to feather it. Adjusting it to turtle mode helped but first thing in the morning I'm going to loosen that castle nut. Thanks for the tips.

Much better. Real easy up and down. No easy job when it is minus 20 outside. Hands freezing to metal. Thanks guys.
