Possible danger of tractor side exhaust

Have you seen a doctor about this? It could be that the minute bit of tractor exhaust you may be inhaling is aggravating something more serious. Get it checked out.

^^^ I second this. It's possible that something in your body has changed and now even a little bit of diesel is affecting you where it didn't before.

My wife developed a problem against dust and paint fumes. I'll spray paint something in the cellar and she'll come in the house and complain she's got breathing problems as soon as she walks in the door.

It might not be the fumes as much as what's going on in your body.

That being said, I do agree that any fumes from anything are not good for humans, but they're there and we'll have to live with them.

edited to add: Don't complain too loudly or Obama will have us all driving electric tractors.

That not hard to picture but the mobile coal powered generator station might be difficult to maneuver.

The last couple of years it sounds like me... clearing my throat to the point it was annoying after a lifetime on no problems...

Doc said I had an allergy that most likely environmental???

All I know is I don't like it and will have to see if it corresponds to working around Diesel equipment...

I borrowed a D3 dozer to do some grading work. This had a vertical straight stack with no flapper. I put 2.5 gallon bucket over it to keep water out I forgot to remove the bucket before starting it, and shot that bucket 10 feet in the air when it roared to life.

When I was a kid, my grandfather would do that when starting his farmall cub. Of course it was just a soup can and he would use the hand crank to start it. My twin sister and I would always get a kick out of him doing that.

Memories, thanks. Those old hand crank starters by Arm Strong. We were putting in pipeline on Otter Ck in SE MT. Ken went out to start the tractor, while I finished putting coffee into our thermos. Ken did not come back and when I rounded the corner at the shop. The tractor was putting along nicely and Ken was laying out cold in front of it, with a big knot on his forehead. Ya gotta be careful around them Arm Strong starters.

I sometimes operate my tractor under my open side wood shed. I can smell the exhaust much worse VS outside in open air.

My two cents: I have operated two BX tractors with factory exhaust for around 850 hours combined time and have never had an issue. I do agree that not inhaling any exhaust would be best.

Reminds me of a blog post I've read before: The Fireplace Delusion: Sam Harris

And slightly off-topic, but I seen someone mentioned electric tractors. I think it could be done, but wouldn't be easy at all. Imagine a "tether", that is a power cable. It hooks to distribution power lines at the end of the field and provides power to the machine. Transport would have to be batteries or a diesel powered generator built in to the rig. This is already being done in mines, but it is simpler because these machines have a more stationary job. Some liquid manure applicators are already using hose reels connected to a large tank at one end of the field, so the hose reel/tether concept has been proven already.
