So here is my dilemma ... I really have to move several hundred yards of dirt about 1/8 mile and spread it out on an island I get to with a causeway. Essentially 50-60 triaxle dump trunk loads.

FWIW, at 1.5 ton per cubic yard, one 20 ton tri-axle load would be 13 cubic yards. So 200 yards would be, like, 8 loads. For something as heavy as dirt, the triaxle might not need the sidewall extensions so maybe you could load it with whatever tractor you have. That said, it's a good reason to get a dump trailer...

I lost ya in the math....

A tri axle dumper will haul 15yds in Missouri. So, 60 loads at 15yds is 900 yards of dirt. Using your math that is 1350 tons of dirt. His first trailer posted will haul 2 ton max. The second will haul 3 ton max. So let's go with the big one. 1,350 tons of dirt divided by 3 = 450 loads. Let's assume he can load the trailer in 15 minutes, which he probably can't. Then assume it takes 10 minutes to transport and dump. Then assume it takes 5 minutes to get back to load site. 30 minutes per load. 450 loads multiplied by 30 = 13,500 minutes. Divided by 60 = 225 hours. 225 hours divided by 8 (assuming 8 hrs a day) = 28 days.

Gotta really think about this. 28 full days to move that dirt using a dump trailer.

Makes a scraper look very, very efficient. Buy it. Haul the dirt. Sell it for purchase price. Makes a dump trailer look very, very expensive. :)

15 yds vs 13 sounds good. I rounded it up to the heavy side of dirt and rounded it up again to tons. But my point was, questioning his needing 50-60 tri-axle loads for "several hundred yards of dirt". Maybe just 7 or 8.

For the project you described, approximately 1,000 cu yd of material, a dump trailer is most certainly NOT what you need. You need a scraper. But then your tractor description of "new" doesn't help me figure out what size scraper you can handle?

I purchased a 5 1/2 yard scraper a few years ago for $4,700. I've repaired a pond dam. Elevated another pond dam 6ft. Elevated a pad to build our house and shop. Great tool.

I thought a scraper was just a blade. Shows how much I have left to learn. Can you post a link to the type of implement you are referring to?

You still haven't clarified what you have for a tractor??

Here's my scraper. 5 1/2 cu yd. I pull it with my 95hp FWA tractor. One rear hydraulic circuit required to operate the dump.

Thanks guys. My tractor is a 2021 Massey Ferguson 1835M. Here is some more information as I know I didn't post enough. I wasn't trying to hijack the thread but I'll quickly lay out the full scenario. I bought some deep water property on the coast. I split off a significant piece to sell to a friend but before doing that, had about 20 triaxles worth of dirt brought in for me to smooth in an areas we had removed trees or that was low, etc. So I did all that and then my friend decided he wanted a pond on the piece I was selling him. SOOOO I ended up with 3/4 acres of dirt about 10 feet high. We moved it from the pond area to the area where I wanted to store it via triaxle dump truck as it was coming out of the pond site.

So fast forward to now and I have one large section of topsoil I want to move over to an island on my property. It has to be accessed by a neighbors gravel driveway. I have a dock walkway built to it for my own access. It sits between the main property and the deep water where the permanent dock is going. The fill dirt can stay on the main property for me to use when we build a house but the topsoil is needed on the island because it had previously had fill dirt put on it and the soil doesn't grow grass well. So that is it in a nutshell. I need to move enough topsoil to cover about 3/4 acre and the other fill dirt can be used however I want on the primary site.

Since we have been given no dimensions of the project, and only have his guesstimate of 50-60 loads, we must assume he needs somewhere around 1,000 yds of dirt. Resulting in 450-500 loads in the trailers he has shown us.

Even using your math of 8 dump truck loads, being 120 cu yds of dirt, he needs 50-60 loads in such trailer.

Hey, at least he didn't pimp his wife in this video.

I stopped watching him long ago for that and when it became overly obvious his opinion was for sale.

I remember when he was on here a lot, think he still is to an extent, and now when I see one of his posts I kind of have to take a second look.

Excellent information.

So let's assume you want to add 6" of topsoil to 3/4 acre?

43,560 sq ft in an acre. 6" equals 1/2 ft. 43,560 divided by 2 = 21,780 cu ft. 21,780 cu ft divided by 27 = 806 cu yds. 806 cu yds divided by 15 = 54. You need 54 large dump truck loads of dirt moved.

If you had the means to pull a scraper the size of mine it would require 147 trips.

I simply realize everything he does here and/or on youtube is for money. It's his job. Nothing heroic about doing your job.
