I think your wrong. The transmission has nothing to do with whether a tractor can pull a load at high speeds. If a 12*12 can do it so can a hydro. To me a hydro for baling would be nicer than the standard transmission. You can easily adjust your speed to the load and keep your PTO going strong. The tractor in the picture to me looks like it is too small to pull a fully loaded hay wagon at high speeds down the road. I am sure it can get the speed up there but if you would have to stop fast I just don't think you would. Transmission has nothing to do with that.

Murph, I disagree with you slightly. I think the hydro is much better for stopping since the hydro adds to braking when you lift the pedal. With a gear tractor, you only have the engine to aid in braking. In my estimation, the only thing a gear tractor does better than a hydro is pull a plow... and maybe build up muscles in your clutch pedal leg. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Traction is the limiting factor concerning braking in this example. Tire to surface friction will be the limiting factor here, not mechanical braking regardless of transmission type. Conventional wisdom says the typical safe trailering weight is 2X tractor weight without trailer braking.

I agree with you and maybe I didn't make myself clear. I was more talking about the tractor size itself and stopping with the large load behind it. The tractor in the picture just looked a bit small to be pulling a baler and a full wagon down the road. Yes hydro will stop better than manual. In the case in the picture I just thought either wouldn't stop fast enough or safe situation.

i agree but i will say one thing
I had a tc 45 da and it was impossible to start at the hill with my trailer in II turtle and rabbit, so i need to select the I gear for a time and now i can start in C group (highest) and in 2nd or 3th so a hydro will do the same thing but slower.
But the hydro is better for mowing and FEL work in narrow places.

Torque is Torque.
Speed is Speed.
The relationship between them really doesn't depend much on the type of transmission, all other things being the same.
I guess you could also start your car in third gear - just up the engine RPMs, feather that clutch, let it slip and burn a while until you get some speed and the torque requirements won't stall the engine.
But then again, why would you want to pull a trailer that is so heavy up a hill at high speed?

I do agree with that statement. I don't know if I "over challenge" my tractor sometimes, but I have hills (or parts of hills) I can't climb in any gear but low-turtle. I'd never consider pulling a bale wagon up those hills though. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
The funny thing about the picture you first showed is that I don't even think about how much a load it is on the tractor when I look at it.
