I finally started on my shop build! :cool2:It's gonna be 60x36 under roof with 48x36 enclosed. Thanks to Rona, I've had more time at home. I got my pad poured in April and it was July :eek:before I could get anyone to come back to pour the apron. I got my welder repaired last week and got my steel ordered. I am using W I-beam for my two headers with I-beam posts. I have a friend who is a structural engineer and he helped with all the numbers/formulas for safety.
I'm trying to do everything myself(my wife and 9 yr old are my only helpers) and pay as I go but will probably get someone to set trusses and do roof.
The door will be 13' tall by 30' wide on the eave end(48' side). The walls inside will be 13'10"

Everything came in 40' lengths, I used 13' posts for minimal waste. Definitely interesting time unloading with the tractor, especially when the driver would not try my drive so I had to unload them on the state highway.

40' is common size for I-beams(at least in my sizes), so instead on adding only 8' and having scrap laying around, I cut one in half and made my 60's, giving me extra covered parking on the north side

Not sure how it'll work but I put angle iron channels on top for the trusses to set in. I will drill holes and can run screws or bolts thru them.
I'm also painting everything with a rust inhibitor before I stand it up.

Now to put legs on the first beam

I'm looking forward to following your progress. I'm especially interested to see your 30 foot wide door!!!!

It will be slow, I normally work a lot of OT and try to maintain family time.
The door is in my mind and my drawing is not the best. LOL I have seen kits that are similar to mine and one homemade version. Mine will be different than both of these. I think it'll work and the beams are sized for the weight, I'm just worried about wind.

I plan to add my post to my beams tomorrow. I know my honey-do list has been brought up again so we'll see.
My next issue is how to stand all this up with my tractor. This will be at the limits of it's reach, plus 30' hanging out both sides!!!

Take all the time you need. Looks like a great project!

Looks like you are making good progress but I think I have you beat on a project dragging along. The main slab was poured on New Years Eve and I still don't have the roof panels on yet. Between weather, covid, work and money slowing down, other farm work to do, it all gets in the way of getting a building finished.

Are you going to use wood or steel purlins? Did you put J-bolts in the slab to bolt the beams to? Keep the pictures coming - it is always nice to see what other people are doing.
