Post Driver Usage Observations

Pretend you are standing in front of the vertical metal c-channel of the post pounder. He is taking a bungee cord wrapping the cord part around the back of the vertical c-channel at about 4' off of the ground. The post he is pounding is against the c-channel (in front of it - between him and the metal c-channel) so he continues to pull the bungee hooks towards him and hooks them together so they rest against the fence post side that is facing him. Then, as the post is pounded in, the bungee holds the post tight against the metal c-channel and the metal hooks allow the post to slide by the bungee some as it is pounded in.

At least that is how i understand him. Simple, quick, and cheap. Nice!

Thanks Ken. I got it now (finally, sigh.) So simple, when you get it... I can see how bungee would do good for a while and be so much easier than messing with a keel roller. If wear were an issue, I'd put some of the auto wiring plastic wire cover over the rubbing part of the bungee or the spiral plastic wrap used for going over wire bundles.

Ken,

You're awesome. This is exactly what I'm doing. I'll try to get photos next time I have it in action, but it will be awhile.

The only thing I would add is that if the bungee is near the top of the post at the finish height, you have the most control (force) on keeping it aligned.

All the best,

Peter

Here is the type of post driver that I am using.

The last auction I attended (and came back empty handed) had a unit that looked just like the one pictured above. They had another unit that looked like an old well driver, way taller than the post driver, but they were selling it as a post driver.

They had a banded unit of 6 1/2 ft by 6 in treated peeler core posts that went for over $6.00 each.

A friend who accompanied me to the auction has had a fence company on the side for over 40 years and gave me advice as to "fair" prices. Everything related to fences went well above his recommendations of top dollar.

Somedays the peanut, somedays the shell...
