Post hole auger

What if want is it on the back hoe have my forks on loaded up with post and I have a creep lever it's perfect to move from hole to hole

Not true Jim. As the loader arms come down, they radius back a little. The difference will be you have to pull forward on each hole a little to keep the auger straight.

This is one reason they make vertical lift skid steers and tracked mini loaders now. Well, besides easier to pull up to a dump truck and judge the distance to dump.

Have you ever drilled a post hole with a 3 pt auger on a hillside? I still think the auger on a FEL is easier to drill a straight hole.

If you hang the auger off the side of the bucket, it will be vertical most of the time.

Auger off the bucket is ideal for many reasons as has been stated.

Just pull the auger off and place in a holder on the top of the bucket. Now you have full use of the bucket.

What disadvantage does anyone see.

The hyd auger on the bucket side, provides a better view.

You have down pressure.

You have fwd and rev.

Your post are in the bucket.

There are probably more good reasons to install the hyd auger on the bucket side.

First off, it is a PITA to remove and replace auger off of the motor just haul some posts in the bucket. Secondly, when you put down force only on one side of the loader bucket......you twist the loader arms. Third, it is easier to keep the auger bit plumb with the backhoe boom and dipperstick then trying to move the tractor a little forward or backward to be plumb. Fourth, I seem to have more flow through the backhoe than the loader circuit.

I have tried both ways, and have provisions to auger from both ways, and I prefer poking holes with the backhoe.

Brandi, you forgot to list out that you would have to make a special effort to get the bucket low enough to get those posts in and out of the bucket that would otherwise be more than a few feet up in the air with the auger hanging off of it. Everyone is not 7'-8' tall.

I would think that it would be pretty tough to beat drilling with a Back hoe. Other than that, I will stick with my 3pt setup with all the hydraulic adjustments.

I guess you could just dump them out. As long as the lines to the auger allow you to dump the bucket.:2cents:

I believe that a 3pt PTO unit would be less money to purchase. If you are worried about down pressure, you can always get a down pressure unit for the 3pt PHD.

Hope this is not too far off subject, but what is a down pressure unit? Obviously the name is...obvious, how does it work?

I went from drilling an 18" hole 4' deep with water soaking and waiting literally for days to having down pressure and drill that same hole dry in less than 2 minutes. Trust me, it makes you a believer real quick. :cool2:

You need a rear remote and a drain to tank inlet. Don't bother with building a kit yourself, just purchase one and be done with it.

The reason I set up this tractor with the auger on the FEL is so that when setting a corner, I can use the backhoe to set all three posts without moving the tractor. This happens to be just an end cap of 2 posts. After taking this picture, I dug the second hole, then dropped both RR ties in with one setting of the tractor. It is 6 of one, half a dozen of the other, you can do the same with the auger and dig 3 holes with the backhoe. I do like the hydraulic auger compared to the 3 pt, very handy when I need to reverse the auger after getting under a root.

I can auger three corner holes without moving the tractor with the backhoe. Two holes in a straight line without moving the tractor. I sit posts too big to handle myself with a chain on the loader bucket's side.

I guess to answer your original question is to install flow meters on your FEL curl circuit and on your backhoe's curl and dump circuit to see which has the best flow. My BH has better flow than my loader's curl circuit.
