Hi I have a New Holland 1720 and am thinking about buying a 3pht post hole auger. I need to put up some more fence for our horses and set some posts for a deck on the house.
Our land has quite heavy clay. I am wondering if it would be better hire someone with a bigger tractor or would mine be big enough.
any thoughts?

Your tractor will be fine, you might need some down pressure on the auger if the clay is dry but I would try it first and make sure the point is clear of any grasses otherwise it won't dig as well.

i have a worksaver model digger mounted on a NH1520, have had no problems with the heavy clay and rocky soil here in Pa. i have used the 12" auger to dig about 500 holes, have needed to replace the cutting blades on it once, they do wear, have not had much problem, but get plenty of shear pins, and get an extra set of cutting bits for your auger. after shearing a few pins, you will learn how to back off when you hit rocks, and when you can bore down, i have had no trouble going as deep as the length of the auger, i doubt your soil is any worse than the glacial till we have here. i dont have a hydraulic top link, but have thought about it.
