yes we was cleaning the auger ever so often digging a hole.the tractor was idling digging the hole an once it would grabb holt it would drill down all the way before you could get the auger out of the hole.an we knew it would suck it in the hole fast an jamm it.it never did lift the front of the tractor off the ground.

ON the other hand, a small boom could be used, extending aft and from the top of the PHD to provide mechanical advantage and adjustable down force. For example, such a boom could extend further back a distance equal to the distance between the auger and the 3-point hitch. With 250-lb of weight mounted on a long screw-rod & collar mechanism, the downforce on the auger could be adjusted between 250 & 500. It's just an issue of leverage. I may have to look into this, but not until I'm familiar with the load capacity of the auger mechanism.

I'm pretty sure one of the manufacturers makes a boom extension that goes out several feet and your helper can pull down on to add downpressure. However, that still won't help if you are hitting rock without a rock bit.

I suggest the operator stay in the tractor seat away from any sheared pin or broken parts that may come flying. No one needs to be on the ground, anywhere close to a PHD while in operation. I had a broken shearpin zing by my head a few years ago and I am sure glad it missed. Ken Sweet

Ok, after some research and talking to various dealers around here, I've narrowed my search down to:
1.) Bush Hog 2203
2.) Land Pride PD35
3.) Woods PHD65.

The Bush Hog 2203 is at the top, but mostly because it has a clutch system rather than a shear pin, while the price is comparable to the other two. I was given a price of ~$1470 for this, new, with a 9" tri-flow auger.

The Land pride PD35 is the comparable land-pride. The gear ratio (4:1) is the same as for the Bush Hog, & the radial pin clutch is optional.

The Woods PHD65, with 9" dual bit auger was quoted at $1325, has a gear ratio of 4:1, & uses shear pins.

So, I think I'll have to see what comparisons are available between these (or start a new thread).

Bush Hog 2103/2203: 265-lb
Land Pride PD35 233-lb
Woods PHD 95: 210-lb


When looking at small weight differences like this, adding weight is simple though. It's making machinery lighter that's the hard part. But it doesn't really matter, for me, since I'm leaning heavily towards the Bush-Hog (w/ a 9" triple flight auger), and it happens to be the heaviest. I like the clutch set-up it has, vs. shear pins/bolts, it appears to be a more heavily-built unit, and the price for one around here is actually less than that for the Land Pride PD35 or Woods PHD95.

I don't too much about the Danuser F7. I saw this ebay ad a couple of days ago I think, and went to look up the F7, but it looks like they don't make it anymore.

As a point of comparison, the Bush Hog 2203 w/ 9" triple-flight auger is roughly the same price.
