Actually, I'm the person that Mr. AceDeuce sold his PHD to. I haven't had occasion to use it. I'm going to be digging holes for my Dad's privacy fence in the spring.

When I mounted it on my 2230 immediately after purchasing, I could lift the tip a solid 6 or 8 inches off the deck. I could definitely see dragging the tip if you transport the unit with the auger attached...unless your project is at the end of your driveway, I'd say it is far more likely that you would drive to the project site WITHOUT the auger attached, then slap it on once you get to where you don't care if the tip drags/digs in the ground.

I think the only difference between the BX1500 and my unit is the high of the tires.
Keith,

my projects this summer are very similar to yours, I want to slowly put up a rustic wood fence around my 1-plus acre most of it would require dragging the post hole digger, through the wooded areas up and over some small ravines and such. Never using or having a post hole digger before this discussion is very helpful, now I know what to expect.

I like Jim Browns idea, sounds like the way to go. Put a strap on the auger and pull it up into the unit. If not, like you mentioned transporting the auger to the area, attaching it on the spot is not a problem. I'm also wondering if transporting water to the area to do a little pre-soak might help make the job of drilling easier. Thanks for all the feed back guys. ;)

I've never had much success with that in any case. If the soil is soft enough to accept the water, you don't need the water anyway. If it is so tough that you think you MUST have water, it won't do anything but make the top 1/2" slippery.

Either way, you have a mess on your hands. Wouldn't fart around with it.

Haven't used it enough to get into the strap thing. Great plan.

Well I'll just have to get it and see what works best. Around here it's wet / damp most of the time anyway, with all the trees surrounding the house we don't get a lot sun especially back in the shaded areas.

When I drive mine around from place to place I take a tie down strap and pull the auger forward and cinch it up. that gives you plenty of cleareance and keeps the auger from swinging back and forth.
Now why didn't I think of that?
That's a great idea. I have 48" auger on my BX-24. On flat ground I can lift it about 4 inches or so. Across open terrain it drags, but not anymore!
