It seems to me I saw a thread a while back that had some pictures of people's wooden PHD stands. I have been only been able to find pictures of steel versions. I don't have any welding gear so I'll have to make mine out of lumber.

Anyone know the thread I'm talking about or have pics of theirs? Thanks!

I don't have a pic, but I did see one last weekend. It was a sales display stand, and to me it would require some rework to make it function well to attach/detach the auger.
It was metal, but should be able to be constructed out of wood as well.

If you can imagine a diamond shaped structure laying on the ground. At one end, the auger tip sits in a bracket.

For the sides of the diamond, there were vertical supports that the lower 3 pt attach points went into.

I looked at it awhile to see if I wanted one for my PHD, but figured I'd still need a tree limb or hoist deal to attach it to the tractor.
The wife's not happy, but my PHD hangs in the back yard from a rachet strap.

Hope this helps.

Here's mine that I made with blackpipe:

Stand for Post Hole Digger Made from Pipe

It has held up well, no sign of wracking or loosening, and I've had the digger off/on about 10 times, rolls easliy around the garage.

Have any trees?

When I first got my PHD I used a tree and it worked pretty well. I just tied it up with a rope. I have attached a picture...

Now that I have a shed, I hang it from a chain. That is even better, because I can take it off the tractor then rotate it around against the wall.

Guess if I did not have a tree or shed though...a stand would be what I would be using too... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I do remember a thread on PHD stands sometime in the last 6 months or so. You might find it with a search...

The PHD is, for me, the most difficult implement to put on and take off, and to "store". So I have thought about sinking a 55 gallon barrel, filling it with coarse sand, lightly oiling the sand with machine oil, and then when I want to take it off, I will back up to the "pit" and auger in and then unhook it. It seems to me that that would be a very convenient way to not only have it stable when you unhook it and hook it up, it would also conveniently store it. I suppose there are a number of flaws with this idea, but unless I am persuaded this is not doable, I may give it a try. the barrel rim would be about 3" above ground level, and the surrounding ground would slope away, and I would tarp it. Thoughts ?

Gee, I just mentioned this in another thread, but I have exactly the opposite experience!

For me, the PHD is the easiest of all implements to deal with.

Now I must say that I have always from day one hung the thing from something. At first it was a tree, and now it is from a floor joist of the loft in my shed.

I honestly don't think there is another implement that is easier to hook up in my case....maybe a boom pole...haven't used that in a while...

I think the key is having the PHD hanging from something...works for me anyway... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Bill, you have identified why I have more difficulty - I didn't have it hanging from anything. The other implements were stationary and I could just back up and they seemed so much more manageable. Then, once I left the PHD in a hole and came back to re-hook it, it was so much easier - thus the idea about sinking a barrel and filling it with sand. I don't have - or can't think of a place I can hang the PHD from - but will consider that option as well. I really had a bear of a problem the first time I hooked it up - not knowing at all how to begin to do so - and I hooked up the bottom links first - that is not the way to begin in my experience. If I leave it in a hole and hook up the top link first it is relatively easy.

Not clever enuf to make a stand (or too lazy). Here's how I store my PHD.
