Thanks everyone for the info, I have used a gas powered post hole digger and that thing dug fast. I'm suriprisedd the 3 point has so many issues.

Well, go drill 100 - 12" holes even 36" deep with that gasser and then tell us that the 3pt has issues. I can guaranty you that no gas powered auger will come close being used in the same conditions.

3PH post hole diggers work well providing they are fitted with the correct cutter. The down pressure type digger is of course better, but remember there has been and still are a great many holes being dug with the original type of 3PH digger.

Ha! if you are talking about the hand held thingamabob with 4 handles, when we first moved here, before we could afford a tractor (I thought) I rented one. I got on 2 handles, had wife on the third, and 2 kids on the 4th.

In short I had a cold supper and bed that night. Digger went back the next day. Got a tractor! Things warmed back up. Grin

Easiest down pressure kit is strapping 300lbs of chain, steel, concrete or whatever you can find over the top of the augur.

That's getting me by for now. May go for a hydraulic kit at some point

My PHD came with a nice 9" augur. Fat carbide teeth on it. It was taking us days to do some holes softening them up with water, standing on the PHD, etc. I go grab a cheap 4" augur for $100 and the dam thing is trying to corkscrew into the ground faster than you can blink with no weight on the PHD. The thinner more aggressive teeth just tear into the clay a lot better. Using the 4" to make pilot holes then reaming with the 9" for now. Will probably get new teeth for the 9" before my upcoming fencing project.
