and I'll be elite (although I just cheated by three posts) /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif.

Frankly I don't care how many posts someone has made. After hanging around for a while, you get to know some of the posters for better or worse. When I ask a question, and get answers (There is ALWAYS an answer for your tractor questions here). I do value certain posters responses over others. Simply because we've built up a "relationship" - Ie I've read what they've posted and have judged their advice better. There are a couple posters who I don't feel add much value so I ignore them.

Just like the "real world" the virtual tbn has it's good and bad. I will say that it is far and away the best place on the net and that the "bad" portion is a miniscule %. Thanks to the effort of the tbn creators and moderators.

I enjoy TBN but you must agree that there is plenty of non related tractor threads in the major forums so why should they count.
Henro
In response to you, last paragraph your reply. I don't particularly care one way or the other, this thread was a light hearted view in which was simply done for conversation. I may not have the written skills of members like Junjman and he gets taken out of context, so I guess it is bound to happen to me. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I do agree. As soon as you figure out a way to programmatically determine which posts, in a tractor related forum, are not tractor related, let Muhammad know. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

P.S.
Vin, my reply was about posts while your comment was about threads. What non tractor related threads are in the major forums?

I have always believed that this site was about members helping members with a little good humor thrown in just for fun. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

There is no such thing as a question that has not been asked or answered here before, but why should that matter? It's all about good clean conversation anyway right?

I didn't make the rule about counting every post, it was made long before I joined TBN. Keep it or change it, I don't think a thing will change otherwise and I wouldn't have a bad day because of the outcome one way or the other. Life is much too short as it is. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

daedong..... in this one thread, you have so far increased your post total by 7!! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

PineRidge........Five Tractor Rating to you for this excellent advise. ( Life is much too short as it is.)

I don't care about numbers, I care about content and context. I post a lot and most of my posts are meant to inform or educate. I also try to research my answers so the information that I will provide will be up to date. Giving someone a name to chase to find the answer to their question in my opinion, isn't being very helpful. I try to locate the information for them and post it. Many times, a company will go out of business and the information will become stale. That is one reason to ask the question again. Many times even if you do a search for the answer in the forums, you will not find the post with the information needed, because for one reason or another, the search word was not properly entered. When searching, use the least amount of words and try to key in on a specific term that would help to find the answer. An example of that would be BX Hydro.... It might return more posts that you could possibly read comfortably in an evening, and still not find the information that you want. This is another reason that a new post is helpful. Also, with new people constantly joining the forums, you will also get a new slant on an old question. No one person here has all the answers, but collectively, we all might have a piece of the puzzle. When all those pieces are put together, the answer will be had. A recent example of this was a "dead" refrigerator problem. Through the collective efforts of the membership, the member that asked the question had an answer in less than 12 hours and the refrigerator was repaired. Another example was when a member forgot to ask his doctor some specific questions about some test results, and posted them on the forums. Shortly thereafter, Cowboydoc answered the questions fully and with more detail than that members doctor gave in previous discussion. (I am basing this on memory, and the details might be skewed slightly, but not intentionally). Many times one persons new problem, may be an old resolved problem or will be a reoccurring problem with a tractor model(example: Kubota BX air cleaner retainer strap) and new information will become available. When the question is asked, the new information is posted, but not before. Hoping that this answers your question, but if not, let me know and I will keep the numbers counters busy by adding additional information as needed to keep you up to date. Thanks for helping me put another notch in my totals. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I will say that I participate in another forum, having to do with amateur sports car racing, in which a high number of posts counts against you. There, the prevailing attitude is, "If you have that many posts, you're spending too much time on the computer. Instead of jawing so much, get out in the garage and work on your race car." The most highly regarded posters are those who actually have something to contribute. There are frequent comments along the lines of, "They don't give trophies for racing the computer."

I should add that those types of personal comments are possible, because the participants refuse any type of moderation. They insist that they are adult enough to disregard what they don't like, and that moderation is censorship. The result is occasional personal attacks, although seldom of the "You're a (censored) jerk" type. The attacks tend to come from the same 2 or 3 people, so the other participants (approx 900 registered) know who to ignore.

It's a totally different atmosphere than TBN. I have no real preference -- each is a sort ot welcome relief from the other.

Isn't that what the moderators are for?

What are you proposing?

Moderators relocate threads all the time, e.g., I just relocated a Kioti specific thread from the general Buying forum to the Kioti buying forum. It's one thing to determine if a thread is in the wrong forum and move it. It's quite another thing to determine if individual posts are.

This post should be relocated, but it contains a quote from a post that shouldn't be relocated. What gets moved? Both? One without the other? Neither?

This post should be relocated, but people have replied to it and those posts shouldn't be moved. (The smallest object that can be moved is a post and all replies).

Something I haven't seen here, that I have on other boards is the moderators intervention in a thread to keep them on subject. It seems often a thread will take off and the most recent posts have nothing to do with the subject of the first post.
I believe a reminder from a moderator to start another thread would keep things on topic.

This other bulletin board I'm thinking of has a much rowdier (and younger) crowd and has several punitive measures that the mods can take against unruly posters. Thankfully this type of system doesn't seem to be needed here.

OTOH: These ideas may be just a bunch of hot air as I've never ran a forum and can't say I have a good idea of the dynamics at work.

Many threads turn out to be similar to the game "Operator", where the first person in line whispers a story to the next person, the next person does the same to the third in line, and so on. When the last person tells the group the story, it very rarely matches the initial one.

A thread will mutate, which makes logical sense when reading each post inline, but the first post and last post seem to make no sense. I don't have much ilk with these threads, but when an entire new subject or question is started that is totally unrelated to the intial or previous post, in my opinion, that is the time a new thread should be started.

can threads be merged??????
Not via any options available to the moderators and my guess is that's it's not possible except, perhaps, at the database level.

I have noticed this by the fact that a thread with an inconspicuous (or even uninteresting) subject line will keep going and building replies. I have to admit that many times I have skipped over a thread due to it seeming uninteresting, but then gone back to check it out after it keeps going and going and going. Sometimes it is good that I look at it again (legal advice RE: Easements), sometimes my initial opinion was correct (Word Association /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif).

Would you like that to be a Left Inner Join or a Right Outer Join?

Sorry....a little SQL humor there. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Sometimes I think it's interesting and rather amusing to see exactly how far off topic a thread can go! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Speaking of furniture, do you prefer sitting on a sofa or a recliner when watching the Olympics?
