Potato Plow

If a guy like me only had three rows 30 feet long of potatoes to harvest this fall...........would middle buster make do , or is better to just use FEL bucket from sides after rest of garden harvested ?

I am worried my wife planted rows to close anyway for my BX2660 with 42" wheel width ...........but what are thoughts for a small farmer/garden like me ?

I have middle buster , FEL or tiller to chose from

Jake, if you have a middle buster that'll work just fine for harvesting potatoes. My middle buster has a 14" wide plow similar to the one in this photo from agri supply's web site.

If what you have is a soil buster with only a thin subsoiler point you can always buy just the furrower for around $16. Cheaper than buying a middle buster.

Since the 3ph doesn't have down pressure, you will need a tooth or 2 to bite into the ground and start the digging action. Maybe a tooth welded flat on each side (left and right sides) of the cutting blade, extending a few inches forward of the blade edge. That might catch the soil enough to pull the main blade into the ground.

That would probably get it to dig. Do you think the teeth would puncture the potatoes?

If the top link is shortened it should bite and dig in to lift the spuds.

I was picturing a 'tooth' on each side, flat on top of the cutting bar, in the corners along the upright cutters. 1/2" thick, 2" wide by 6" long, with only 3" overhanging the front edge and the other 3" tacked on top of the lower flat edge/cutter. That would put them to the outside edges of the potato row. It would also be in line with the existing bottom edge, and slightly deeper, so they would not run into any more potatoes than your current bottom edge. I'm just brainstorming by looking at your plow. I know that plow would not dig into my hard soil either without something to start the cut and pull it down.

Thanks. Now I get it.

Only problem now is I missed out on getting potatoes to plant this year.

I use this dual plow to get my spuds out.

That looks like it would work pretty good.

About 3 years ago I saw one that was in the u shape and had a thin flat beveled edge like a dirt scoop. The man said it would dif in like a scoop and he had the rods attached to the back of it on a pivot. He had a short pto shaft hooked to the pto and a set of pillow block bearings on the digger. he had an offset shaft on the side with a small connecting rod on it down to the the rods. That made them shake. It also helped with the digging. His devie also worked on peanuts to. Right now we only use a middle buster but I have been growing them in some baskets with leaves.

I don't have pictures of my homemade one, but looks almost identical to first photo . Trust me it works great!! brings the potatoes up to the top as slick as can be. made mine with scraps laying around and the tines were old electric fence posts. easy build. I should mention my tines were welded to a cultivator tip and angled slightly downward so it digs in. like I said it works great , I'll never hand dig again.
