I guess I'm too dense, but I don't understand this. You bought the saw? Had you paid for it? What did it cost? Why would you owe them $50? And are you saying they would not take the saw back and refund your money? Just confused.

I've owned 2 Poulan saws; one in the early '80s, gave it away when we went to full time RVing in '89, and one in the mid-90s that I sold when we had to move back to town in '02. I had great luck with both; couldn't have asked for anything better. But I've seen a number of posts like this, and even one of my brothers bought a Poulan and had so much trouble with it, he promptly returned it. It seems they've had some serious problems and I wonder why.

Poulans back in the 80s were still (although on their last legs) building professional saws used in logging. I had one of them then, good saw but it wouldn't hold the carb setting for some reason. Then the Sihls and other 'furinner' saws captured the professional market.

CurrentPoulan saws are "consumer grade" built to sell at the bottom level of even that standard. For only a few bucks more ...okay, about $80 more last year you could get a 'consumer grade' Stihl and it was a real saw, not something like the Wild Thing and the like.

Are you fellas saying Poulan has changed ? I ask because I have had a Poulan for 15 yrs. + now and it has never failed me...I replace and sharpen my own blades but other than that I have never had a problem and my Son borrows it all the time when his Husquvarna won't start...So I need to know if they are made cheaper now and not as good in case I need a new one some day...

Those older Poulans were great saws. Remember the old yellow Mcculloch's? Great saws. I think the newer Poulans sold at Walmart are cheap and not the same saw.

The poulans sold at wally world are the plastic crank cased 33cc 40cc 42cc versions. Similar built to the stihl homeowner saws 170 180 210 250 290 etc. Except the poulans are easier to work on compared to the plastic homeowner stihls for a 1/3 of the cost.
Comes down to knowing how to set one up once you get the saw open. They are to lean from the factory to meet epa standards.

I've got a couple wild things that I service that have been in service for ever. Good cheap homeowner trim saws IMHO. Only needing fuel lines and a plug.

You want a good plastic cased poulan with anti vibe and not solid mount. Try a 220 260 etc. They will out cut the homeowner stihls in same cc size.

Got to be smarter then the saw your using

xyz123 I'm not sure how you can say that the ms290 is a cheap homeowner saw or even the ms250... I have had many walmart brand saws(wild thing) and they suck in comparison to my stihls... I still have the cheap saws and only use those to cut saplings so I don't care if I hit the ground... I don't see how in any way you can compare those saws to stihls they are worlds apart.

I have owned 029, 029 super a new MS290 a 025 (only because they were trade in's). They are cheaply built stihl homeowner saws with plastic cases just like the newer poulans. That's all I am saying. I hate working on them. I even get ones that dealers cant fix when new. There are bad ones out there of every brand. The poulan is a piece of cake to work on compared to the stihl homeowner saws.

wally wild thing 40cc 42cc $119 - $129. 250 290 45cc 56.5cc $299- $379. Big difference.

Just so you know I'm not brand bias. I just like real saws better not plastic ones.

I don't disagree with you on the service aspect of it but I do feel that the stihls well out perform the wild things.

I bought a Poulan Wild Thing chainsaw at Walmart in Hillsborough NC about 9 years ago. I have used it, my son-in-law has used it and he has loaned it to his friends also. I mostly use it as a backup to my Stihl. I replaced the fuel line once and the plastic bubble cover that you press to prime the gas. It has served me well and I remember buying it on sale at Walmart for $99.99. It was on sale at the time. I got my money's worth although I wouldn't classify this saw as being heavy duty and being used in major timber projects. I also have a Craftsman with 18 inch bar that I have owned around 12 years. It is still going strong. Happy Tractoring.:tractor:
