Power Line to my house was broken

Holy carp that was an amazing video. I hope he gets paid well to do that job. The pilot as well.

I've read they make 6 figures. Sitting out there, on the edge of a platform, far enough above the ground to die if you fall, not to mention the wires, voltage and spinning blades of death that will follow you down... you'd hope they're paying you well. Gotta trust your pilot and the equipment. Yikes.

I have a friend that was the chief engineer at a local TV station. He was out at the transmitter site to allow a tower climber access to work on something on the top of the 1100' tower. The climber heads up the tower. About half an hour later, the climber calls him on the walkie-talkie and ask, "Hey, is there a 1/2" wrench sitting on the desk down there?". Engineer looks over and responds, "Yep." Climber responds, "*%&$&#!!!!!"

20 minutes later the climber walks in the door, grabs the wrench and walks back out. Didn't say a word.

Driving down to Dayton, OH from northern MI to visit my daughter, I wondered about the big hgh tower electrical transmission lines. Ones with 6 or 8 wires. Are those all primaries, ie like 7200 volts? Just wondering with all this electrical knowledge here. Jon

Most consider 69kv to be the lowest transmission voltage going 115 kv, 138kv, 230kv and as high as 765kv as Coobie said it could be any range of those voltages depending on the company, back when the insulators were porcelain or glass you could get a good idea of the voltage by counting how many bells were in the string, but today most if not all new transmission construction will be polymer which weighs about 1/4 of what porcelain or glass weighs. I have only worked live line on 138,000 and 230,000 nothing higher, clearances phase to phase and phase to ground are everything when doing that kind of hot work , you have to constantly be monitoring your clearances and atmospheric conditions.

I guess I won’t complain anymore having to go back to the basement to get a forgot tool.

The number of cables will be in multiples of 3, as in a 3 phases (phases A, B, and C). Six conductors may be one circuit with 2 conductors per phase; or there’s 2 individual 3 phase circuits on the tower.
If there’s 8 wires, I believe the other 2 wires, which are usually smaller, run on top of the towers, and have smaller insulator connections at the tower, are grounded and are for lightning protection. A shield.
I don’t believe, and others can confirm, that the smaller 2 aren’t any type of neutral line related to any “grounded” transmission systems.

Transmission lines usually have 1or2 static wires (for lightning strikes) running between towers or poles.They are grounded..
