I have a BX2200. I have been experience power loss problems, particularly when going up hill while running my brush hog off the rear PTO. Funny thing is that it doesn't happen all the time, but does happen a lot. When it happens the engine almost cuts out (but does not), runs at lower power for a while, then cranks back up to full power (and then the cycle repeats). Can any of you give me some idea of what might be wrong?

Sorry for posting this on the buying forum the first time.

Are you running the engine at PTO speed which is at least 3/4 throttle? You can run it at full throttle if you need to. Too many people baby these machines, these diesels are designed to run at full speed for extended periods of time. Also when it starts to loose power let up on the the HST pedal(that puts you in a lower gear so to speak) If you are not cutting in low range try that and see if the problem goes away. I would also look at the usual things like enough fuel, fuel filter, air filter.

As mentioned above, check the fuel filter first. I would then do a check on the fuel pump. Also look for a pinched fuel line.

As the other guys said fuel or air.

If there was an air flow problem you'd think it would be all the time. However fuel would have a hard time going up a fuel line if gravity was pushing against it. Down hill gravity helps it move. Something must be not flowing correctly. Does it idle bad on flat surfaces? What grade are you taking about?

The RPM thing is another theory which sounds reasonable. Diesels run forever. WOT or almost is best

Opinions opinions opinions...............

Mine did that, it was water in the fuel. My new Mr. Funnel insures that it will never do that again. (thanks to this forum!)

Sounds a lot like a problem I was having with my B2910 last week...came and went...worked fine then no power at all...

Turned out to be a dirty fuel filter. It was scheduled to be changed at 400 hours...only made it to 392... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I think the bx has two fuel filters...I would change them both...

Sounds a LOT like water in the fuel because the exact same thing happened to me. A clogged filter won't suddenly just "unclog" letting the machine power up again.

Drain about a gallon out of the bottom of the tank, change both filters, prime & go. You should be OK then.

Thanks for all the help, guys.

To answer some of your questions:

I always brush hog in low range and at full throttle. I don't baby my tractor (or my truck or anything else, except my daughter).

It typically does not idle poorly on flat surfaces.

I don't know the percentage grade I am running uphill on, but it is steep enough that if you try to walk up it fast you can get a little winded even if you are fairly fit.
