The sprayer seemed to force it into the wood, but I had some nonuniform spots. However, the job was done more quickly than I could have done it by hand.
The owner's manual for the Wagner "Optimus Plus" sprayer says "the stain tip has a specially designed opening for use with thin materials such as thin stains, sealers and waterproofers....If you did not receive a stain tip...the tip can be purchased at your local retailer."
My impression is you'd have to buy the stain tip, too. That still doesn't answer your original question of how it well it would spray stain. Wagner's technical services telephone no. is 800-328-8251. You might call them and ask which product they'd recommend for the job to see what they say.
I was thinking he was referring to the hiding stain almost like pancake syrup (read thick) that is what I did my deck with.
